Background Francis pump turbine http://www.tva.gov/power/pumpstorart.htmhttp://www.tfd.chalmers.se/~hani/phdproject/francispicture.gif

Modeling Francis Pump Turbine Code our own model Commercial libraries – HydroPlant Free libraries – ThermoPower – SPOT – TechThermo – Modelica Fluid (Beta)

Dymola Model

Wrapper File Tweak Problem: – After simulation in ModelCenter, reservoir levels remained constant Fix: – markAsBeginning “UpperRes.level”offset=1 markAsBeginning “UpperRes.level”offset=-1 variable: upperLevel double12units=“m” Skips UpperRes.level_start within the dsin.txt.template file

Fix: – Add upper level parameter – Kevin’s “hack” – Delete annotations Making Parameters Variable in Dymola Problem: – After simulation in Dymola, certain parameters were not able to be modified through the simulation interface

Combining Two Time Independent Responses Problem: – To optimize the overall system’s utility, pumpFlow values were needed from within the simulation, not at the end Fix: – Modify Dymola model to record the maximum flow rate [m 3 /s] through the pump, so that this value is available to ModelCenter after the simulation completes

Handling Design Variables that are also Uncertain Variables -0.06 -0.05 -0.04 -0.03 -0.02 -0.01 0 0.01

Results Pipe Diameter [m] Height Differential [m] Pump Efficiency [%] Turbine Efficiency [%] Overall Utility 0.7212223.278690.850.900.41435 Pipe Diameter [m] Height Differential [m] Pump Efficiency [%] Turbine Efficiency [%] Overall Utility 0.7175624.420870.850.900.42613 Deterministic Optimization Uncertainty Optimization (100 Samples)

Conclusions Your design problem is never too simple It’s called a “beta” version for a reason Test, test, test your model; successful runs in Dymola (HW3) does not guarantee smooth sailing in ModelCenter (HW4) Elicitations are more intricate than what meets the eye Having one Windows capable “laptop” per group member would be nice in hindsight
