CHAPTER3. RESEARCH METHODOLGY By Augustine 2013.05.09

UPSTREAM,MID STREAM & DOWNSTREAM

Supply chain link in the oil and Gas industry Exploration Production Refining Marketing Consumer

 Study Design and Scope Descriptive survey research design To achieve the study objectives, Cross-Sectional Survey Design will be used The cases will be used outsourcing companies such as Tullow, Total SA, CNOOC & Heritage Oil involved in exploration, production, refinery, marketing and distribution

Map of Uganda showing selected districts of the Albertine Graben G kaaahh Hoima DistrictHoima District (in red), located along Lake Albert, has been the site of the petroleum findsLake Albert

 Data collection, Processing and Analysis  Sample Selection  Stratified random sampling will be considered over the non-probabilistic methods  The different companies with direct and indirect relationship to the petroleum value chain formed the basis for stratification  These companies include Tullow Oil, CNOOC, Total SA, and Heritage oil will be the strata

 SAMPLE SIZE A total of 4 Oil companies ¾ will be interviewed Resulting 75%

oil and Gas companies VS outsourced activities VS 3PLs Oil and Gas Companies Activities outsourcedThird parties Logistics Heritage Oil  Exploration phase  Survey and Mapping  seismic data collection  drilling exploration  logging and well coring  Road grading and leveling drilling area  drill pad and pits  installation s of drill rig and associated engines, pumps and equipment  core sampling  Drilling/Developme nt phase  wellhead  compressors  separators  dehydrators  storage tanks  reserve and flare pits Tullow oil  SDV Transami  Spedag Interfreight Total SA  SDV Transami  Spedag Interfreight CNOOC  Three Ways shipping  Spedag interfreight  SDV Transami

 Methods of Data collection personal interviews and Focus Group Discussions (FGDs) interview guides and questionnaires, thematic checklists will be used for the FGDs

 Data Processing and Analysis qualitative and quantitative methods Qualitative data will be analyzed using N-VIVO software quantitative data will be analyzed using Statistical Package for Social Scientists (SPSS) Logit model

 Reliability and Validity measure Validity refers to how accurately the construct reflects what it intends to measure reliability refers to the consistency of the results obtained

The Logit model will therefore used in this research study Logit Model of a number P between 0 and 1 is given by the formulae: Logit (P)= Log(P/1-P)=Log(p)-Log(1-P). This is in reduced form of a Logit model can be expressed as: Y = α +βiXi +ε Where Y is dependent variable (performance of logistics companies in the oil and gas sector =1, or not =0); α is a constant; Xi are the explanatory variables; βi are a vector of explanatory variable coefficients; and ε is error term

Tab.Description of the variables and proxies Variable Label Variable Descriptio n Variable DataHypo thesi zed effect Dependent variables Logistics performance Dichotomous Poor performance(0), 1=High performance Independe nt Variables Alleviate Administra tive burden Categorical+ Admin.
