6 FACULTY MENTOR  Volunteer position  Meets at least once per month with the student during the academic year  Aims to help the student to transition to academic culture by discussing the field, grad school experiences, etc. Also serves as a listening ear and encourager. RESEARCH SUPERVISOR   Paid position (summer contract)   Meets at least 5 hours per week (in person or virtually) during all of INDV 460 (May 26-July 31, 2015)   Guides the student’s specific research project FACULTY MENTOR VS. RESEARCH SUPERVISOR?

7 Spring  Select a Mentor  Receive Academic Assistance and Maintain GPA over 3.00  Attend all Seminars and Workshops  Receive Academic Counseling and Advising from McNair Staff  Possibly apply for REUs May Interim   Participate INDV 360: Summer Research Internship I   Develop Bibliographic Search Skills   Develop Computer Skills   Develop a Research Design   Receive Academic Counseling and Advising WHAT SOPHOMORES WILL DO

8 Academic Year  Receive Mentoring  Continue to Receive Academic Counseling  Take INDV 400: Grad School Preparation  Maintain High GPA  Submit (in Spring) a proposal for INDV 460: Summer Research Internship II as well as applications for external REUs (if applicable) Summer   Participate INDV 460: Summer Research Internship II or an external REU   If in INDV 460:  Conduct a study and write a research report  Present research to peers and faculty  Participate in GRE Preparation  Participate in personal statement preparation  Finalize a prospective grad institutions and key faculty list  Finalize a CV   Continue to Receive Academic Counseling and Advising WHAT JUNIORS WILL DO
