Professional Development Teaching in a way that is effectively aligned with the Common Core takes practice, effort, and patience. We are accelerating the process by offering extensive professional development for our teachers. Venetia Valley teachers are lifelong learners.
English Language Arts Kindergarten, 1 st, & 2 nd grade teachers are working with Laurie Olsen and her team of coaches. They work extensively on thematic unit planning and English language development & alignment to common core.
Mathematics 4 th & 5 th grade teachers are working with Hallie Foster & Julie McNamara on Common Core alignment & best practices in teaching mathematics. 6 th -8 th grade teachers are also working with Hallie and Julie, as well as with Davidson & the high schools on Common Core & vertical alignment as they articulate across the grade levels 6-12.
Science, Social Studies, English 6-8 teachers are working with Phyllis Goldsmith & Emily Richards, of the UC Berkeley History-Social Science project, on cross-discipline writing strategies. Literacy leads in ELA and Science attend articulation meetings with DMS & high school leads. K-5 teachers are working with Phyllis & Emily on writing prompts and strategies.
Common Core “Shifts” Shift 1-Read more informational text Shift 2-Read more complex text Shift 3-Use of academic vocabulary Shift 4-Have conversations around texts Shift 5-Use evidence to inform or to make an argument Shift 6-Reading and writing is emphasized in all subjects.
Why the change???? So all students are college and career ready!!
