MUSIC Latvian music has a long tradition beginning with folk, classical music to popular music. Popular Latvian composers are Raimonds Pauls, Imants Kalnins, Emils Darzins. The most popular musicians in Latvia are Lauris Reiniks, Martins Freimanis, Aija Andrejeva, Andris Erglis. The most popular Latvian pop groups are Prata Vetra (Brainstorm), Livi, Tumsa, Gain Fast. 2002 -in Eurovision Song Contest won Marija Naumova with song “I wanna”. One of the most unique tradition is Latvian Song and Dance festival. About 30 000 people take part in this festival in choirs and dance groups. The first Latvian song and dance festival was in 1873.
LATVIAN WRITERS Latvia has a lot of different writers. For example, Ojars Vacietis wrote poetry collections for children. Imants Ziedonis writes stories and poems for adults and children.
SPORT In Latvia are professional ice hockey, basketball and football leagues. Latvia takes a part in Olympic Games. Since 1992 year the Latvians have won 17 medals. The most popular sportsmen are: Maris Stromberg (BMX) Martins Dukurs (skeletonist) Jelena Propokcuka (runner) Ernests Gulbis (tennis). At this moment the best ice hokey team in Latvia is “Dinamo Riga”. The hockey in Latvia is played since 1920 s. Latvia has taken a part in many world championships.
CITIES The largest cities are Riga, Daugavpils and Liepaja. Riga is the capital of Latvia.
INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT LATVIA The coolest gadget of 20th century, the spy photocam Minox was invented in Latvia. Riga's Central market is the largest market in the Baltics and one of the largest open Markets in Europe and even in the world. (72,3 thousand m²) The bridge of Karosta in Liepaja is the only cropped bridge in the Baltic which is still working. Ventas Rumba (waterfall) in Kuldiga is the widest waterfall in Europe (249 m). Aerodium’s wind tunnel is the first vertical tunnel in Eastern Europe.
