July 19 - 25, 2009 “If the watchman sees the sword coming and does not blow the trumpet to warn the people and the sword comes and takes the life of one of them, that man will be taken away because of his sin, but I will hold the watchman accountable for his blood.” (Ezekiel 33:6, New International Version) Weekly World Watch Andy Walton’s To skip the introductory slides and go straight to this weeks developments click here.

What is a Weekly World Watch? Israel: The continuing conflict in the Middle East and focus on Jerusalem. Europe: Its developing union, both political and religious. Russia: Its return to anti-Western ways as Bible prophecy’s “king of the north.” The UK and the US: Bible prophecy’s “king of the south.” Moral standards in decline and violence on the increase. WWW presentations in PowerPoint can be ordered as audio/visual CDs by clicking here. Move your mouse to place the cursor on the blue link and click.clicking here The idea is simple. It is to look at current events and compare them to events spoken of in the Bible.. I hope to build up a picture of God’s hand working in the affairs of this world. God is bringing about a day when all nations will be gathered to Jerusalem to battle. At that time God will send His Son, the Lord Jesus Christ, back to this earth. Jesus will then establish God’s kingdom on earth. This kingdom will last for ever. This is our hope and the reason we watch. Increasing natural disasters: including earthquake, famine etc The following six themes will appear repeatedly in WWW:

HEADLINE EVENT COMMENT News Photo The source of the headline and the date are included. Each WWW looks at a few key developments that have happened during the past week. It is in no way meant to be exhaustive – just a look at those events I saw as significant from a Biblical point of view. What is in a Weekly World Watch? BIBLE QUOTE This is normally one verse which backs up why the event that has occurred is interesting from a Biblical perspective. Please read in its context. Unless stated otherwise, all quotes are from the King James Version. (Book, chapter, and verse) This is straight from a news report that caught my eye because it looked significant from a Biblical perspective, usually that of prophecy. Every WWW event slide has the following format. To reveal each block of text just left click your mouse or press the space bar. You control when it appears. This is the reporter’s description of the event. It is always a direct quotation from the news report and reflects the understanding of the reporter and editors. This is my comment on why the event is interesting to a Bible student. The intention of the WWW is to offer brief Biblical perspectives without going into detail. If more detail is desired, please e-mail me: (

Israeli PM defiant on Jerusalem In 1967 – for the first time in 1897 years – Jerusalem became the united capital of Israel again. It was (no doubt) one of the most significant events in relation to Bible prophecy in the last days. When Israel was re-created in 1948 Jerusalem was divided in two. Israel had west Jerusalem and the Jordanians had east Jerusalem (including the old city where Temple Mount is.) Following the 6 Day War (and on the 7th day they rested!) the Jewish people had captured not only Jerusalem but all the land as detailed in Numbers 34. Jesus spoke of Jerusalem being united under Jewish control in Luke 21. He said that Jerusalem would be trodden down by Gentiles (non Jews) UNTIL the times of the Gentiles are fulfilled. He does not mention Jerusalem being taken back by Gentiles again. Jerusalem will be the united capital of Israel when Christ returns…. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has rejected a reported US request that a building project in Jerusalem be halted. The project involves building 20 apartments in the mainly Arab East Jerusalem area, which was captured by Israel in 1967. Last week US officials told the Israeli ambassador that the project should be suspended, Israeli media said. But Mr Netanyahu rejected this in comments at his weekly Cabinet meeting. "We cannot accept the idea that Jews will not have the right to live and buy (homes) anywhere in Jerusalem," he said. "Unified Jerusalem is the capital of the Jewish people and the state of Israel. Our sovereignty over it is unquestionable." BBConline, July 19, 2009 EVENT COMMENT And they shall fall by the edge of the sword, and shall be led away captive into all nations: and Jerusalem shall be trodden down of the Gentiles, until the times of the Gentiles be fulfilled. BIBLE QUOTE (Luke 21:24) Watch clip on this click here

Israel concerned over US "Umbrella" on Iran This is a serious setback in Israel's defences against Iranian ballistic missiles. The newly upgraded Arrow II missile defence system, poised for its first long-range test at the US Pacific range off the central California coast, could not be launched because of "interceptor problems.“ This left Israel's key defence system, designed to intercept long-range Iranian or Syrian missiles 1,000 km from their launch point, unproven. We know that Israel will be defeated in the end – though only temporarily as Christ will intervene. The defence systems that Israel thinks it can rely on will not be enough therefore. As this test fails Israel feels more vulnerable and her enemies stronger…. A series of failed tests of a joint U.S.-Israel anti-missile system raised new questions Thursday about the U.S. goal of providing an "umbrella" to defend its allies against an Iranian nuclear attack. The technological setbacks also drew renewed attention to Israel's concerns about a nuclear-armed Iran and the possibility that it might lean further in the direction of a go- it alone strike against the country's atomic facilities. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton's offer this week of a "defense umbrella" over its Gulf Arab allies to prevent Tehran from dominating the region "once they have a nuclear weapon" was widely seen in Israel as an acceptance of a nuclear-armed Iran. She later tried to dispel that view, but her comments sparked criticism by Israeli officials. Israel considers Iran its most dangerous enemy because of its nuclear program, long- range missile development and repeated references by its president, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, to Israel's destruction. Iran has insisted that its nuclear program is for peaceful purposes, but Israel and the U.S. reject that. Associated Press, July 23, 2009 EVENT COMMENT For I will gather all nations against Jerusalem to battle; and the city shall be taken, and the houses rifled, and the women ravished; and half of the city shall go forth into captivity BIBLE QUOTE (Zechariah 14:2)

Russia builds key naval HQ in Syria Russia is working closely with Syria in developing this new military base in Tartus. Russia is also planning on installing sophisticated missile systems in Syria on the pretext of defending the facility against air or missile attack. Israel is deeply concerned about this. We are watching the original king of the north (Syria) work the new king of the north (Russia). We know the king of the north is different in the last days because Ezekiel 38 tells us the exact territory of the king of the north – i.e. Magog, Meshech and Tubal. These are all territories of modern Russia. We also read in Daniel 11 that the king of the north comes with “many ships”. We see this situation develop…. A high-ranking Russian navy source reported July 21 that the Soviet-era naval maintenance base near Tartus in Syria is to be expanded and modernized to become "fully operational." DEBKAfile's military sources report that Russia is building the facility up as its main sea base for operations in four seas: The Atlantic and Indian Oceans and the Mediterranean and Red Seas. The upgrade of Russian port facilities at Tartus, its only foothold in the Mediterranean, will automatically enhance Moscow's strategic interests in Syria and Bashar Assad's regime. The Russian source said that the 50 naval personnel and three berthing floats currently deployed at Tartus with accommodation for up a dozen warships will be beefed up with a new berthing float delivered by two tugboats from the Black Sea Fleet. DEBKAfile's sources disclose that those warships will include large vessels such as the nuclear-armed guided missile cruiser Peter the Great and the aircraft carrier Admiral Kuznetsov, which called in at Tartus in January. Debkafile, July 21, 2009 EVENT COMMENT the king of the north shall come against him like a whirlwind, with chariots, and with horsemen, and with many ships; and he shall enter into the countries, and shall overflow and pass over. BIBLE QUOTE (Daniel 11:40)

Georgians seek US military support Mikheil Saakashvili, the Georgian president, appealed to the United States yesterday to help him acquire advanced weapons systems as fears grow of a new war with Russia. As Joe Biden, the US Vice-President, began a visit to the country, Mr Saakashvili told the Daily Telegraph that the defensive armaments could deter a second Russian invasion. Almost a year after the two states went to war, there is speculations that Kremlin hawks could create a pretext for another conflict in order to force Mr Saakashvili from office. The Georgian president said he would stress the urgency in discussions with Me Biden. “The main message is to move fast,” Mr Saakashvili said in an interview in the capital, Tbilisi. “Pledges are nice, but we need things now. There is not much time to spare.” Daily Telegraph, July 23, 2009 EVENT COMMENT And at the time of the end shall the king of the south push [goad, thrust, gore, engage] at him: and the king of the north shall come against him like a whirlwind BIBLE QUOTE (Daniel 11:40) “Fears grow of a new war with Russia” - “There is not much time to spare” we read in the report above. There will be a new war with Russia – of that we are certain. Russia must come through Georgia to get down to Israel. Perhaps the next war will see Russia not only descend into Georgia but on and down into the Middle East. It is amazing that Georgia is pro America and that America is supporting this tiny country. There is little doubt that the oil pipelines that pass through Georgia are the reason for this. Russia vowed on Thursday to prevent its pro-Western neighbour Georgia from rearming and threatened nations who helped it, in a harsh warning aimed at America. Russia is being goaded/pushed by America and Russia will respond…

'Record rise' in UK anti-Semitism Anti-Semitic attacks in the UK doubled in the first half of this year compared with the same period in 2008, according to new figures. The Jewish Community Security Trust, which monitors anti-Semitism, says it recorded 609 incidents between January and June - up from 276 last year. Most incidents were abusive behaviour, but there were also 77 violent acts. The trust said the rise had been driven by anger over Israel's military campaign against Hamas in Gaza. That conflict, between December 2008 and January 2009, was followed by an almost immediate rise in anti-Semitic incidents in the UK. According to the CST, the total number of incidents for the first six months of this year was worse than the previous record of 598 incidents for the whole of 2006. BBConline, July 23, 2009 EVENT COMMENT And thou shalt become an astonishment, a proverb, and a byword, among all nations whither the LORD shall lead thee. BIBLE QUOTE (Deuteronomy 28:37) Anti-Semitism is a term used to describe prejudice against or hostility towards Jews, often rooted in hatred of their ethnic background, culture, or religion. So says one online dictionary. Is there any other race of people on earth that has it own word to describe hatred towards them in particular. If a British person was abused for being British there is no unique word to describe this for a British person. And yet for Jews there is. Why? Well God said this would be the case. The verse below in Deuteronomy says that Israel will be an “astonishment”. This means a “horror” or “appalment”. God also says they would be a “byword”. This means a “taunt” of “gibe". Notice that most of the incidents recorded above were verbal abusive behaviour. Only when Christ returns will the Jews be understood – for then it will be clear they are God’s chosen people.

Longest total solar eclipse this century People in Asia have seen the longest total solar eclipse this century, with large areas of India and China plunged into darkness. Amateur stargazers and scientists travelled far to see the eclipse, which lasted six minutes and 39 seconds at its maximum point. The eclipse could first be seen early on Wednesday in eastern India. It then moved east across India, Nepal, Burma, Bangladesh, Bhutan, China, Japan and the Pacific. The eclipse first became total over India at 0053GMT, and was last visible from land at Nikumaroro Island in the South Pacific nation of Kiribati. It ended at 0418GMT. Elsewhere, a partial eclipse was visible across much of Asia. BBConline, July 22, 2009 EVENT COMMENT When I consider thy heavens, the work of thy fingers, the moon and the stars, which thou hast ordained; What is man, that thou art mindful of him? BIBLE QUOTE (Psalm 8:3) While we look for symbolic signs in the sun, moon and stars on earth there is little doubt that the same verses can refer to literal signs in the literal heavens. This week we have seen TWO events. The longest total solar eclipse that will occur in this century. Surely a solar eclipse is where the sun and moon do literally go dark. Also this week, astronomers in Hawaii recorded an exceedingly rare event. An amazing photograph revealed a comet or asteroid, probably no more than a mile across, plowing into Jupiter’s atmosphere. The impact created a fireball roughly the size of the planet earth. The good news is that Jupiter was just doing its job, cleaning out the solar system of stray comets and asteroids. Jupiter, 318 times more massive than the earth, acts like a cosmic vacuum cleaner, sucking in or deflecting debris that flies around the universe. If it weren’t for Jupiter’s colossal gravitational field, we wouldn’t be here, since the earth would be hit with deadly comet and meteor impacts every month or so. God’s hand controls all these things – they are signs he exists AND cares for us. Jupiter – black mark is where the comet hit. It is the size of earth!
