On reflection… Associate Teachers’ Course 13 February 2009

It’s here again! Concrete Experience Reflective Observation Abstract Concept- ualisation Active Experiment- ation

Concrete Experience Reflective Observation Abstract Concept- ualisation Active Experiment- ation What happened? What does it mean? How does it fit? So what do I/we do?

In relation to micro-teaching, think of two reflective observations to share …which you may be able to use later in your Introductory Reflective Statement and your first assignment. We actually did this exercise earlier on

I’m willing to bet… Nerves Memory Relief Feedback … …that these would be some of the popular themes

...the most powerful single moderator that enhances achievement is feedback. The most simple prescription for improving education must be "dollops of feedback". it means providing information how and why the [student] understands and misunderstands, and what directions the student must take to improve. Hattie (1992:4) This is the simple message from a meta- analysis of educational interventions—and one borne out by your experience of the micro-teaching exercises

Reflection is a way to give feedback to yourself

Concrete Experience Reflective Observation Abstract Concept- ualisation Active Experiment- ation What happened? What does it mean? How does it fit? So what do I/we do?

Approaches to the structuring of reflection: use whichever are useful to you

The questions are key Much more so than the answers… which are never more than provisional in any case.

The dark side of reflection! Self-indulgence Pretentiousness Over-confidence Arrogance Depression Guilt Blaming Whingeing If it weren’t for… Beware!

It needs to be objectified Discuss with a supervisor Discuss with a “critical friend” Write it down in a notebook Blog it Use a formal scheme Such dark effects are much more likely if you keep it all in your head.

Such as “DATA” Peters (1994), Hiller (2002) Describe Analyse Theorise Act One recommended approach to reflection. Haven’t we seen it somewhere before?
