3. Internet History May, 1985: Inauguration of Gulfnet, the first general computer network in the Arabian Gulf, with the membership of a number of universities and with KACST as the main hub. April, 1989: Connection of GulfNet to Bitnet through George Washington University (by way of KACST). December, 1998: Official Resolution: Decree # 163 charging KACST to introduce the Internet service to the country. September, 2004: Official Resolution: Decree # 229 charging KACST to provide network services to academic and research sectors

8. KACST mission KACST is the leading nonprofit government institution in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia for science, technology and innovation. KACST is dedicated for developing the nation's science and technology infrastructure, conducting applied research, and designing and implementing national science and technology policies and programs, as well as supporting science and technology research in the Kingdom. As the Kingdom's leadership begins to emphasize the role of science and technology in economic development, KACST's role for the promotion and execution of scientific research and development of technology is expanding rapidly. From its basic charter of 31/12/1985G (19/4/1406H), KACST main responsibilities can be summarized as: Propose national policy for the development of science and technology and devise the strategy and plans necessary to implement them. Conduct applied research and consult for the government on science and technology matters. Support scientific research and technology development. Foster international links and cooperation in science and technology.

NREN هي شبكة أكاديمية بحثية على غرار الشبكات العالمية الحديثة ( مثل :Internet2 و Geant3) ويطلق عليها مبدئيا إسم " مشاع " و الغرض منها هو ربط الجامعات والجهات البحثية والأكاديمية والمكتبات العامة والمتاحف الحكومية في المملكة بسعات عالية (Gigabits) وتقنيات متقدمة (NGN) عن طريق ألياف بصرية وتزويدها بالتطبيقات والخدمات الأساسية مثل الإجتماعات الإفتراضية (videoconferencing) ونقل المحاضرات (Live streaming) وبث الأخبار الحية (RSS) وتيسير الوصول الى مصادر المعلومات العالمية (Digital Libraries) ، وغيرها، وتوفير الدعم الفني لتشغيلها وربط هذه الشبكة أيضا بالشبكات الأكاديمية العالمية لتسهيل تواصل الباحثين في المملكة بأقرانهم في الخارج.
