WWBAT understand the significance of Hammurabi’s code and evaluate his choices using Dr. Kohlberg’s mountain.

2 Who was Hammurabi? Leader of Mesopotamia around 1750 BC (That is over 3,700 years ago!!!) A Mesopotamian King of Babylon (A city-state)

3 What did Hammurabi Want? wanted to heighten city walls to protect the people wanted to have a peaceful city-state wanted to give consequences for those who make poor choices

4 wrote a series of laws to display in the town for everyone to see One of the very first recorded set of laws in history

8 Objectives WWBAT learn about how the Code of Hammurabi applies to the Kolhberg’s Mountain Why did Hammurabi write these codes? What level on the Kohlberg’s Mountain was he at?

9 Kohlberg’s Level 1 I don’t want to get in trouble  Maybe Hammurabi didn’t want his people to take over and kill him…so he made a code.  What level on the Kohlberg’s mountain does this go with?  Level 1

10 Kohlberg’s Level 2 I want a reward  Hammurabi wanted to sure his people were in order so he would be wealthier

11 Kohlberg’s Level 3 I want people to like me  Hammurabi wanted his people to be more secure so he would be more popular

12 Kohlberg’s Level 4 I want to follow the rules  Hammurabi wanted to do what all rulers should do and made rules

13 Kohlberg’s Level 5 I want what’s best for my community  Hammurabi wanted to do what was best for his community

14 Kohlberg’s Level 6 I have my own moral code  Hammurabi thought the codes were morally the right thing to do.
