Did you read the novel quizzes (Razor) By Ms. Teref
Quiz #1 – Respond in complete sentences - example 1.(factual) P. 63, Last line: “Elliot took this as a reflection on himself…” What does THIS refer to? Be as specific as possible. Possible response: “This” refers to the comment made by Marie Louise de Florimond, a friend of Elliot Templeton’s whose “sexual voracity was insatiable.” (62) She paid Isabelle a back- handed compliment by calling her “pretty” but without “chic” or elegance. Elliot took the loose woman’s remark personally because he tried very hard to make Isabelle and his sister Louisa presentable before his rich French guests by taking his niece and her mother to shop for Chanel clothes. By de Florimond calling Isabelle an inelegant “savage” woman, she made Elliott’s plan unsuccessful, which made him feel humiliated.
Quiz #1 – Answer in complete sentences 1.(factual) P.74. Mid-page: “I can’t darling. It would be death to me. It would be the betrayal of my soul.” What does IT refer to? Be specific. Do NOT merely summarize. 2.(interpretive) P.68: From “Perhaps it isn’t…” to “…like a million dollars.” Explain Larry’s use of figurative language. (hint: 3 similes) What does he mean? Do NOT merely summarize. 3.(interpretive) P. 69: (entire paragraph 1) “ I want to make up my mind whether God is or God is not…” Identify the tone and explain what Larry means. Do NOT merely summarize.
QUIZ: Identify who is talking to whom in this scene. Explain what prompted the conversation and what happens next. Describe the placement of this scene as accurately as possible. Prove you’re a good reader. (92) “You see, I thought when it came to a showdown he’d knuckle under. I knew he was weak.” “Weak?” I cried. “What made you think that? A man who for a year withstood the disapproval of all his friends and associates because he was determined to go his own way.” “I could always do anything I wanted with him. I could turn him round my little finger. He was never a leader in the things we did. He just tagged along with the crowd.”
QUIZ: Identify who is talking to whom and why. Explain what prompted the conversation and what happens immediately afterward. Describe the placement of this scene as accurately as possible. Prove you’re a good reader. (208) -“I think it’s idiotic and blasphemous.” -“I only wanted to suggest to you that self-sacrifice is a passion so overwhelming that beside it even lust and hunger are trifling. It whirls its victim to destruction in the highest affirmation of his personality. The object doesn’t matter; it may be worthwhile or it may worthless. No wine is so intoxicating, no love so shattering, no vice so compelling. When he sacrifices himself man for a moment is greater than God, for how can God, infinite and omnipotent, sacrifice himself. At best he can only sacrifice his only begotten son.” -“Oh Christ, how you bore, me.”
