WARTIME RELATIONSHIPS Those who have lost loved ones look to each other in their need. The concept of the “forest wife” and “forest husband” took hold – relationships were sometimes forged as much out of practicality as romance. DEFIANCE ©2008 Paramount Vantage. Review © David Bruce
Based on an extraordinary true story, "Defiance" is an epic tale of family, honor, vengeance and salvation in World War II. The year is 1941 and the Jews of Eastern Europe are being massacred by the thousands. Managing to escape certain death, three brothers take refuge in the dense surrounding woods they have known since childhood. DEFIANCE ©2008 Paramount Vantage. Review © David Bruce
There they begin their desperate battle against the Nazis. Daniel Craig, Liev Schreiber and Jamie Bell star as brothers who turn a primitive struggle to survive into something far more consequential – a way to avenge the deaths of their loved ones by saving thousands of others. DEFIANCE ©2008 Paramount Vantage. Review © David Bruce
At first it is all they can do to stay alive. But gradually, as whispers of their daring spreads, they begin to attract others – men and women, young and old – willing to risk everything for the sake of even a moment's freedom. DEFIANCE ©2008 Paramount Vantage. Review © David Bruce
Tuvia (Craig) is a reluctant leader and his decisions are challenged by his brother, Zus (Schreiber) who worries that Tuvia's idealistic plans will doom them all. Asael (Bell) is the youngest – caught between his brothers' fierce rivalry. DEFIANCE ©2008 Paramount Vantage. Review © David Bruce
As a brutal winter descends, they work to create a community, and to keep faith alive when all humanity appeared to be lost. DEFIANCE ©2008 Paramount Vantage. Review © David Bruce
THE COMMUNITY AS A CHARACTER Director Ed Zwick: “The community itself is a character that begins to express its own will and identity; a fascinating dynamic develops between the expression of an individual’s needs and the group’s survival as a whole” DEFIANCE ©2008 Paramount Vantage. Review © David Bruce
JOHN FORD STYLE Producer Pieter Jan Brugge: “There’s something in the story that has elements of the old John Ford films – this idea that you’re not just a rugged, isolated individual but that it’s important where you stand in relationship to others and your community” DEFIANCE ©2008 Paramount Vantage. Review © David Bruce
Consensus voice: “Whatever its shortcomings, the film should be seen as a testimony to the true story of Jews who lived in a Belarus forest for years during the Holocaust” --Harvey S. Karten, Compuserve DEFIANCE ©2008 Paramount Vantage. Review © David Bruce
ACTIONS HAVE CONSEQUENCES “The real legacy of the Bielskis is that so many people are here on earth who might never have lived.” -- Zvi Bielski, one of Zus’ sons DEFIANCE ©2008 Paramount Vantage. Review © David Bruce
TESTIMONY FOR DEFIANCE! TESTIMONY FOR DEFIANCE! None of us would wish hardship on anyone. Disasters that cripple human existence are exactly that –disasters! So, it is always amazing to hear of acts of endurance, survival, compassion and solidarity that come out such situations as portrayed in Defiance. Inspiring, to be sure. In stark contrast to the murderous persecution by the Nazis, there is the heroic life-giving saga of the Bielski partisans. I give the highest praise the producers of this film who have given us a testimony of those who stood in defiance to Hitler’s evil. Here the kind of inspiration we all need, to be sure. “Really, this is not a film about death and dying but about surviving and living as fully as you can.” -- Alexa Davalos DEFIANCE ©2008 Paramount Vantage. Review © David Bruce
“Even in the most trying of times, especially in wartime, love and longing are never absent” -- Director Ed Zwick DEFIANCE ©2008 Paramount Vantage. Review © David Bruce
