3 KICK-OFF Way to start the 1 st half and 2 nd half u Based on results of coin toss u Always same direction (teams switch ends of field) u 2 nd half kick-off done by team that didn’t start the 1 st half u A goal can be scored from kick-off Way to start play after a goal is scored u Done by team that was scored against

5 KICK-OFF MECHANICS At kick-off: u Each team in own half of field u Defenders at least 10 yards from ball u Ball stationary on center mark u You give a signal for kick-off (How?) u Ball is in play when it is kicked and moves forward

7 PROBLEMS AT KICK-OFF v Players in wrong half of field v Ball does not move forward v Ball leaves field directly from kick- off Restart based on which line the ball crossed v Taken before referee’s signal Retake the kick v Kicker plays ball a second time “second touch” – IFK to opposing team

8 A dropped ball is a way of restarting the match after a temporary stoppage which becomes necessary, while the ball is in play, for any reason not mentioned elsewhere in the Laws of the Game DROPPED BALL In other words …. Drop the ball to restart play whenever play has stopped and the Law doesn’t tell you how to restart!

9 DROPPED BALL PROCEDURES v Referee drops ball (from waist high) v Where ball was when play was stopped (except in goal area) v No players required (2 players traditional) v Re-drop if: u touched by player before it hits ground u ball leaves field before touched

10 REVIEW At the kick-off: v Where are the players? u Players are in their own half of field v How far away are the defenders u at least 10 yards from ball v When is the ball in play? u When it is kicked forward v Can a goal be scored directly? u Yes v Must there be a signal for play to start? u Yes

11 REVIEW (cont’) v Any violations (except 2 nd touch) Retake the kick v 2 nd touch by kicker IFK for opponents v Dropped ball for undefined stoppages u Where does the dropped ball take place? u When is the ball in play? u What happens if a player touches the ball before it hits the ground? u Who can participate? How many can?
