2 2 What is Overtime? Overtime is the amount of time someone works beyond normal working hours. Normal hours may be determined by agreement between employers and workers or their representatives.

3 3 What are the Overtime rates? Time-and-a-half (x1.5) for the first 2 or 3 hours beyond normal working hours. Double-time (x2) after the first 2 or 3 hours beyond normal working hours. There are other rates but they are not common.

4 4 What is an Overtime Meals Allowance? Meal Allowances may be paid if an employee works more than 2 hours past normal working hours. Meal allowances may not be paid if one days notice is given. Check your award.

5 5 1. A teacher earning $78 000 works for 2 hours after school. How much extra does he get paid? Nothing 2. A beautician/manager on a salary of $45 000 works for 5 extra hours on the shop floor. How much extra does she get paid? Nothing

6 6 3. A plumber earns a wage of $53/hour for a 38 hour week. He does overtime for 2 hours at time-and-a-half and 1 hour at double-time. How much does he get paid? Pay = 38 hours x$53/hr x 1Normal time. + 2 hours x$53/hr x 1.5Time-and-a-half. + 1 hour x$53/hr x 2Double-time. = $2 120.00
