Intelligent Compaction (IC) Initiative “An Overview and Accomplishments” Michael M. Arasteh USDOT, FHWA, TST EDC Exchange for Local and Tribal Agencies April 3, 2014

Intelligent Compaction What is IC? IC History in FHWA, EDC National Performance Goals, IC Benefits, and Accomplishments.

What is Intelligent Compaction? IC Roller - FHWA Requirements: IC Measurement Value (ICMV), High Precision Positioning Systems (HPPS), On-Board, color-coded display, Surface temperature measurement system (Asphalt rollers only), and Raw data that is Veda-compatible.

Single Drum IC Rollers Bomag CaterpillarAmmann-Case DynapacSakai HAMM-Wirtgen Soils and Subbase

Double Drum IC Rollers Bomag Caterpillar Sakai HAMM-Wirtgen Asphalt Pending

IC History in FHWA TPF-5 (128) - A study on actual pavement projects, ICPF was a 3-Yr research, 12 states, and 16 Projects, It completed in 2011, final report is available. Research on following types of materials: Soils, Sub base (including aggregate base), and Asphalt materials.

EDC National Performance Goals Initiate construction of seventy five (75) construction projects with IC being utilized Initiate construction of two (2) IC projects by at least twenty five (25) distinct transportation facility owners Initiate construction of seventy five (75) construction projects with IC being utilized Initiate construction of two (2) IC projects by at least twenty five (25) distinct transportation facility owners

IC Benefits Research shows that IC allows for improved roller passes. More consistent passes that matched the optimum pass count established in the control strip were applied. More consistent roller coverage will result in reduced variability in density.

Overall Benefits of IC Improve density………….Better performance Improve efficiency……….Cost savings Increase information…….Better QC Overall Benefit: Improved Pavement Performance! 12 Accomplishments 34 states are implementing IC, 3 lead states (CA, TX, and MN), 29 projects completed in 2013, 44 projects are to be constructed in 2014, 10 demo projects are complete, 6 pilot projects have been completed, and 18 states developed specifications for IC.
