Female Genital Tract Pathology Practical:

The Slides The Slides  Slide 1: Intraductal Carcinoma of the Breast  Slide 2: Invasive Duct Carcinoma of the Breast  Slide 3: Paget’s Disease of the Breast  Slide 4: Dermoid Cyst of the Ovary

Intraductal Carcinoma of the Breast Slide shows the following:  Large ducts are distended by neoplastic epithelial cells which are pleomorphic with hyperchromatic nuclei; some exhibiting Mitoses  Cells form imperfect acini and show Cribriform pattern  Small groups of necrotic cells in the center of many ducts  No invasion of Basement Membrane of the ducts

Brest Tissue replaced by grayish-pink fleshy tumor Orange Peel (Peau de Orange) appearance of skin Retracted Nipple surrounded by Thickened Areola

Large distended ducts with necrotic cells in center

Cribriform pattern & Imperfect Acini

Invasive Duct Carcinoma of the Breast Slide shows the following:  Cords, Sheets & nests of tumor cells surrounded by dense fibrous tissue, stroma containing scattered lymphocytes  Tumor cells are Round or Polygonal with deeply stained nuclei & occasional mitoses  Focal tumor cells necrosis  Invasion of Breast Adipose tissue by Tumor cells  Few tumor cells form Duct-Like structures

Invasion of Breast Adipose Tissue

Deeply Stained Round or Polygonal cells

Tumor cells forming DUCT-LIKE structures

Paget’s Disease of the Breast Slide shows the following:  Ulceration and invasion of epidermis by ductal carcinoma cells (Paget cells), present between basal cells in elongated rete pegs  Paget cells are Large, anaplastic cells having pale cytoplasm, hyperchromatic nuclei with occasional mitosis  Paget cells are present in either singly or in small groups of 2 or 3 surrounded by a clear zone “Halo”  Deeper tissue shows Intraductal proliferation of neoplastic epithelial cells

Paget Cells Showing all previously mentioned Features: -Large, anaplastic, pale cytoplasm, hyper chromatic Nuclei, clear Halo zone

Dermoid Cyst of Ovary Slide shows the following:  Stratified squamous epithelium with underlying appendages (sweat glands, sebaceous glands, hair follicles), columnar ciliated epithelium, mucous & serous glands and structures from other germ layers such as Bone, Cartilage, Lymphoid tissue, Smooth muscle and large area of Brain Tissue containing Neurons and Glial cells.
