Work Package Four (WP4)
WP4: (emergent) Analytical Framework Development of an analytical framework for the analysis of the role of belief systems in perceptions of different forms of vulnerability
What are the project aims to which this analytical framework applies? To better understand the role of beliefs, values, and attitudes in perceptions of biological, socio- economic and cultural-spiritual vulnerability To give a holistic, multi-dimensional picture of how belief systems influence perceptions about livelihoods and biodiversity Construction of a belief scale based on the information and analysis of the research
Analytical framework Applies to what? –Perceptions of biological, socio-economic and cultural-spiritual vulnerability NOT all the beliefs anyone has ever had! What does it do? –Tells us how to approach the study of belief systems in different countries and contexts What is it going to look like? –Emergent (methodology)
How do we collect the data? Approach Methodology Method (Iterative process of data capturing) –Community interaction Unstructured and semi-structured interviews Focus groups Household survey Participatory Action Research (PAR) Choice experiments (?)
Emergent method analysis for the analytical framework Method Household survey Focus Groups PARInterviewsChoice Experi- ments What is needed 5 questions in the survey Focus groups needed (depending on themes) Extra interaction with the community InterviewsIf this happens (?) Collabo- ration with? WP 6AllNew (15 per village) 15 per willage for WP4 & all WPs who do interviews WP6 (15 per village)
Construction of a biodiversity and livelihoods belief scale (BLS) to analytically examine public belief systems WP4: Biodiversity and livelihoods belief scale
WP4: Belief Scale
Belief 3 Belief 2 Belief 1
WP4: Belief Scale
Belief scale practical (1) 1.Name the five things (not items or objects) that are important for you to live a full and happy life (whatever fulfilled means to you). 2.Rank these five things in order of most important (cannot do without) and least important (can do without if need to)
Belief scale practical (2) 3.Take that which you ranked number 1 and fill in the following:
Local Perspective Q: Does your belief in/value of/attitude to ……….. make you more or less vulnerable in terms of biodiversity/cultural spiritual/socio-economic vulnerability?
Scientific Perspective Q: Does this individual’s belief in/value of/attitude to ……. (which may cause certain behaviour) make him/her more or less vulnerable in terms of biodiversity/cultural spiritual/socio economic vulnerability according to a scientific understanding of this issue?
