Reports are available at

Developed by the PCINE Bridge Technical Committee –Available at PCINE Guidelines for Accelerated Bridge Construction

Focuses on the use of precast concrete Written by the PCI Northeast Bridge Technical Committee –Northeast State DOT’s –PCI Fabricators –Consultants Includes footings Based on ACI Emulation Design Includes design, detailing, and construction information Recommends the use of grouted splice connectors PCINE Guidelines for Accelerated Bridge Construction

Precast Abutments – New Hampshire DOT

Completed Bridge

Precast Integral Abutments – Maine DOT

DETOUR Phase I: 4 Day Closure Close bridge & detour traffic Excavate to remove obstructions for pile driving Drive 8 steel H-Piles Cover piles and re-open to traffic

DETOUR Phase II: 4 Day Closure Close bridge and detour traffic Remove old bridge Excavate to expose new piles and remove old abutments Cut pile to elevation and place prefabricated abutments Backfill and stabilize slopes with riprap

DETOUR Phase II: 4 Day Closure Erect 10-65’ pre-cast pre-stressed concrete box beams Erect 4 precast concrete approach slabs and place aggregate subbase Place temporary barrier and open to traffic - no leveling slab! Install curb and Guardrail Remove temporary barrier Place membrane and asphalt wearing surface Project Completed!!

Completed Bridge

Precast Piers – Florida DOT

Development of the NEXT beam Why Develop a New Bridge Section? Box Beams have limitations Accommodation of Utilities Difficult Fabrication Process Multi-step process Difficult Field Process Grouting of Joints Post-Tensioning

High Level RR Platform Beam Development of the NEXT beam

High Level RR Platform Beam Development of the NEXT beam

High Level RR Platform Beam Development of the NEXT beam

Depth 24” – 36” in 4” increments Typical Span Range 50 – 85’ Width will vary 8’-0” – 12’-0” Used for bridges with utilities Works very well for Accelerated Construction.

NEXT Beam Adjustable Width 8’ to 12’

NEXT Beam Combinations

Accelerated Construction using the NEXT Beam Design Example – Mike Culmo
