The The “ Northern Israel Life Sciences and Biotechnology knowledge Cluster ” Introduction: The Power of Regions of Knowledge Clusters and - Israel BioNorth - A Knowledge Cluster and its Advantages, in general - The “ Northern Israel Biotechnology Cluster ” - - Main Goals and Activities of Initiative. December 2008 Dr. A. Rotem – S. Neaman Institute “Regions of Knowledge” - Call for Partners As per FP7-REGIONS

Knowledge Cluster A geographically bounded concentration of similar related businesses, and research institutes with active channels for business transactions and communications, that share specialized infrastructure, labor markets and services and face common opportunities and threats. (Rosenfeld, 1997)Rosenfeld December, 2008 Dr. A. Rotem – S. Neaman Institute

What makes a knowledge cluster successful? What makes a knowledge cluster successful? Knowledge exchange ! (Porter 1989) Dense communications/Social Networks (Powell et al. 1996) Culture; e.g. Rt. 128 vs. Silicon Valley (Saxenian 1994) Academic Institutions & Industry, cooperation (Brookings 2002) “ Inter-organizational network is an important mechanism facilitating innovation and the growth of organizational knowledge ” facilitating innovation and the growth of organizational knowledge ” (A. Oliver 2004, Hebrew University) (A. Oliver 2004, Hebrew University) December 2008 Dr. A. Rotem – S. Neaman Institute

What are the benefits of a knowledge Cluster ? What are the benefits of a knowledge Cluster ? From the State point of view 1. Efficient use of limited economic development resources 2. Tool to leverage broader regional economic growth 3. Promotes competitiveness in regional industries From the Firm point of view Labor force skills 1. Technology and Knowledge transfer Mutual usage of Facilities From the Worker point of view Job market-opportunities Social infrastructure And there is more … December, 2008 Dr. A. Rotem – S. Neaman Institute

BioNorth knowledge Cluster - Main Goal and objectives: To enhance interactions and hence research and industrial productivity in the area of Biotechnology, Life Sciences and Biomedical Technology in Northern Israel. Main objective: To bring together research scientists in academia and cognate industries, together with funding agencies and private sources of support, in order to develop a synergistic cooperative effort. The means whereby this objective will be achieved, include: A series of focused symposia on specific topics of mutual interest in the area of Biotechnology, Life Sciences and Biomedical Technologies. Maintenance and further development of the BioNorth website – the network aimed to enhance synergism of all forces involved. December 2008 Dr. A. Rotem – S. Neaman Institute

To achieve these goals and objectives a steering committee has been established by the representatives of the five organizations In the north of Israel: - S. Neaman Institute; - Haifa Economic Corporation Ltd; - Technion, Israel Institute of Technology; - Rambam Health Care Campus; - Rappaport Institute for Research in the Medical Science; Prof. Karl Skorecki – The director of Rappaport Institute was elected on March 2006 as the chairman of the BioNorth steering committee. December 2008 Dr. A. Rotem – S. Neaman Institute BioNorth knowledge Cluster - Main Goal and objectives:

December 2008 Dr. A. Rotem – S. Neaman Institute On April website went on air And is daily maintained and developed

December 2008 This is how www. bionorth.org.ilwww. bionorth.org.il ‘Home Page’ - looks like… You are all invited to visit the site and learn about the Northern Israeli Bio-Technological activities

A series of specific topics symposia has taken place since then: 1. “Novel technologies for improving food quality & safety” (Dec. 2006) 2. “Biological wastewater treatment” (Feb. 2007) 3. “BHLSI, MATI Haifa & BioNorth Life Sciences Conference (Mar. 2007) 4. “Innovations in Antibiotics Research at the Technion ” (July 2007) 5. “Applied Bio-Catalysis” (Oct. 2007) December 2008 Dr. A. Rotem – S. Neaman Institute

Additional symposia: 6. “Next Generation of Medical Product, Systems & Services (Dec. 2007) 7. “Novel Technologies related to Image Guided Surgery” (Feb. 2008) 8. “Innovative Treatments for CNS Disorders” (Apr. 2008) 9. “Bio-Medical Device Systems – Industry & Academy Cooperation” (July 2008) 10. Next Seminar: “Bio-Sensors – Novel Technologies” January 22 nd December 2008 Dr. A. Rotem – S. Neaman Institute

An Examples of the interest and success that BioNorth have : Contact of a potential investor (from Canada) Name: Mitchell Nimeck Address: 31 Hescott St City: Elmsdale State: NS Country: Canada ZIP: B2S 1L7 Telephone: Comments: For well over a year I have been reading about the incredible advances made in Israel via the Israel 21 newsletter. Today I read about the Technion development using mice in advanced drug trials. This is the type of research that I would love to support via investment. I would appreciate any information on how a Canadian and avid supporter of Israel can invest in G-ds country. May 14 th, 2008 Dr. Abraham Rotem – S. Neaman Institute

Another Example of the success of BioNorth symposia: Feedback From a senior Prof. - Timor Baazov regarding his seminar on “Innovations in Antibiotics Research” Dear Abraham: I would like to take the opportunity and express my personal, and on behalf all the participants, our gratitude and thanks for your initiative, enormous help, cooperation and organization of such important and insightful meeting today. It is important for all of us, important to the Technion, and important for our country. Great! And many - many thanks. With my personal bests, Timor Baasov July, 2007 December 2008 Dr. A. Rotem – S. Neaman Institute

And the BioNorth knowledge cluster continue… On April 16 th 2008 an important meeting of BioNorth steering committee took place. All participants indicated two years of important activity and success and decided to continue and further support the project. A new Chairman was elected to the steering committee – Prof. Yuval Shoam - the former dean of the ‘Faculty of Biotechnology and Food Engineering’ December 2008 Dr. A. Rotem – S. Neaman Institute

Call for Partners BioNorth is hoping to further develop communication and enhance synergism of all forces involved and thus encourage biotechnology and life sciences in Israel. BioNorth is looking for European partners to establish a “Knowledge Cluster” on the subjects of Bio-Technology, Life-Sciences and Bio-Medical -Engineering To be integrated in the European - “Region on Knowledge Cluster” program As per FP7-REGIONS Point of contact :Dr. Abraham Rotem – S. Neaman Institute, Technion, Haifa. Phone: Mail:
