2 Joe DiMaggio“Have faith in the Yankees my son. Think of the great DiMaggio (17).”“The great DiMaggio is himself again (21).”“I would like to take the great DiMaggio fishing,” the old man said. “They say his father was a fisherman. Maybe he was as poor as we are and would understand (22).”Joe DiMaggio is person who is an important symbol in The Old Man and the Sea. Joe DiMaggio stands for an attitude of Ernest Hemingway’s code. Joe DiMaggio is supposed to symbolize Santiago because both people are stoic, which means that they both don’t show emotions. Also Joe DiMaggio symbolizes the Hemingway code, which is to have courage, endurance, skill and loyalty.
3 LionsHe was still sleeping on his face and the boy was sitting by him watching him. The old man was dreaming about the lions (127).“After that he began to dream of the long yellow beach and he saw the first of the lions come down onto it in the early dark and then the other lions came and he rested his chin on the wood of the bows where the ship lay anchored with the evening off-shore breeze and he waited to see if there would be more lions and he was happy (81).He did not dream of the lions but instead of a vast school of porpoises (81)...The lions are like objects which he dreams about a lot. The lions stand for a quality. The lions symbolize youth, strength and powerful.
4 The MarlinNever have I seen a greater, or more beautiful, or a calmer or more noble thing than you, brother.I wish I could feed the fish, he thought. He is my brother. But I must kill him and keep strong to do it (59).…into the fish’s side just behind the great chest fin that rose high in the air to the altitude of the man’s chest (94).The Marlin is an object which the old man had fought with. The Marlin is supposed to symbolize a quality. The Marlin symbolizes beauty, patience, strength, nobleness, and calmness. The Marlin also symbolizes a brother to the old man.
5 ManolinI must have water here for him, the boy thought, and soap and a good towel (21).Then he said aloud, “I wish I had the boy. To help me and to see this (48).”“No,” the boy said. “tell them not to bother Santiago. I’ll be back (123).”Manolin is a person which was a great friend to the old man. Manolin is supposed to stand for a value. Manolin symbolizes a great importance to the old man. He is the inspiration to the old man and symbolizes a great helper. He helps the old man stay alive and really cares for him.
6 Santiago“Santiago,” the boy said to him as they climbed the bank from where the skiff was hauled up (10).He took all his pain and what was let of his strength and his long gone pride and he put it against the fish’s agony (93)…You are killing me, fish, the old man thought. But you have a right to. (92)Santiago is a person and the main character of the story. Santiago stands for an attitude. Santiago symbolizes courage, skill, endurance and loyalty to the fish.
