2 Introduction The Greek word husterēma, occurring 9x in the NT, derived from hustereō [to come late, be behind, come short], refers to “that which is lacking.” It signifies either a deficiency in something desirable or the possession of something undesirable.

3 Unmet Physical Needs Poverty of the Poor Widow (Luke 21:1-4, esp. vs. 4; Mark 12:42-44). Support for Needy Saints (2 Cor. 8:7-15, esp. vs. 14; 9:6-15, esp. vs. 12). Support for Evangelistic Endeavors (1 Cor. 16:15-18, esp. vs. 17; 2 Cor. 11:7-9, esp. vs. 9; Phil. 2:29-30, esp. vs. 30; cf. also 4:10-20).

4 Unmet Spiritual Needs Lack of Faith (1 Thess. 3:1-10; esp. vs. 10; cf. also Mark 9:14-29; Luke 17:3-5). Lack of Suffering (Col. 1:24; cf. Acts 9:10-16). – Although we pursue the paths of peace (Rom. 12:18; 14:19), conflict with the world is unavoidable (John 15:18-20; 1 John 3:13). – We must willingly share in Christ’s suffering (Rom. 8:16-17; 2 Cor. 1:5-7; Phil. 3:10; 1 Pet. 4:12-16).
