2 Respiratory System Vocabulary Review The Living Environment - NYS 1.2 – The student should be able to describe and explain the structures and functions of the human body at different organizational levels (for example, systems, tissues, cells, organelles) Remember to wait for the vocabulary word to pop up! 3 Respiration The process by which oxygen and carbon dioxide are exchanged between cells, the blood and air in the lungs

4 Pharynx Open space behind nose and mouth and above the larynx, passageway for both air and food

5 Epiglottis Flap located at base of tongue, above larynx

6 Larynx Directly above trachea, contains vocal cords

7 Trachea Lays in front of the esophagus, tube through which air moves

8 Bronchi At the base of the trachea, two main branches of bronchial tree ? ? ?
