6 Eat Speech Taste The tongue moves and pushes a small bit of food along with saliva into your esophagus, which is a food pipe that leads from your throat to your stomach. The top of your tongue is covered with a layer of bumps called papillae Papillae help grip food and move it around while you chew. They contain your taste buds, so you can taste everything.

7 Process to taste food -Flavoring chemicals in food dissolve in the saliva -Stimulates the taste buds to send messages to the brain. -Messages are sent to the brain to give us the taste of the food chemicals in food sensory cell

8 -Humans have five kinds of taste buds. sweetsoursalty, bitter, unami -They can detect five kinds of tastes: sweet, sour, salty, bitter, and unami. - Each kind of taste buds is not evenly distributed on the tongue. 11 How do we smell ? smell -Nose is the sense organ that detects smell. -There are millions of smell receptors inside our nose. nasal cavity

13 Why do warm foods have stronger flavor than cold foods? chemicals This is because when food is heated, more chemicals in food diffuse into the air.

14 Some medicine is unpleasant to take. You can hold your nose while taking the medicine. This helps take away the unpleasant feeling.

15 Our tongue can only distinguish about 5 different tastes. But our nose can distinguish about 4000 different chemicals. Thus, when our nose is also used to sense the food, the food ‘tastes’ better. chocolate flavour Our nose can tell us not only the sweet taste of ice-cream, but also whether it is chocolate flavour or not.

16 Why do the elders like to take in food with strong flavor? It’s too salty!

20 Materials: reproducible scissors tape colored pencils, crayons, or markers (optional) 1)Cut out the three pieces along the solid black lines. 2)Cut open the slot at the back of the mouth. Then fold the piece over along the dotted lines. 3)Insert the flap at the back of the tongue piece into the mouth slot as shown. 4)Fold the tongue tab back down along the dotted line and tape it to the back of the mouth piece. 5)Cut out the hatch-lined area of the lips piece. Tape the top of the lips piece to the top of the other piece and its bottom to the bottom of the lips piece.
