1 The war helped to keep prices of food low enough for everyone to afford to eat a healthier diet. Rationing stopped people eating too many fatty foods such as cheese, butter, lard, meat and biscuits. Instead, people were forced to eat more fruit and vegetables. 3 Every morning a radio programme called The Kitchen Front offered recipes and advice about food. To save butter, use potatoes to make pastry and smear dripping - from meat juices- on bread.
