2  Strategy: An action that can bring about change  Personal Strategies: a person’s own individual means of dealing with situations  Interpersonal Strategies: communications between individuals in order to solve problems  Societal Strategies: problem solving to bring about healthy changes using the resources and commitment of groups of people or the community

3  Describe a strategy (an action) every person in the community could potentially contribute to, in order to promote healthier outcomes for all adolescents. This strategy needs to relate directly to your health issue, and the societal influence explained in Q1  Explain why this strategy would bring about healthier outcomes for adolescent

4  Interpersonal – Describe a strategy that an adolescent and at least one other person could be involved in to promote healthier outcomes for him or herself  Personal – Describe a strategy that an individual adolescent could take to promote healthier outcomes for him or herself

5 Personal (personally and individually motivated to do)  Learning assertive skills  Sticking to decisions that reflect personal values; not giving in to what others expect  Explore other ways of helping to increase their confidence, feelings of insecurity  Explore other ways of helping to deal with stress (exercise, spending time with friends)  Seeking help from others  Learning new skills and knowledge

6 Interpersonal (an adolescent and at least one other person could be involved in) - Interpersonal strategies involve communication  Using assertiveness skills in response to peer pressure  Treating others with respect by not pressuring them into drinking excessive amounts of alcohol in one occasion. Accepting their decision  Make an agreement with their parents about the amount of alcohol they are able to drink at parties on any one occasion  When hosting a party, offer alternatives to alcohol – finding activities that aren’t alcohol related  Helping a friend

7 Societal (whole community/ every person in the community could contribute to) Political – advocates for a law change or change to policies and practices  Impose heavier penalties of passing alcohol to minors and parents/legal guardian supervision when adolescents are drinking.  Advocating for a change to raise the age of which people can purchase alcohol Cultural – Challenges societal attitudes, values and behaviours offers alternative practices  Social Campaigns to make communities become more aware that adult drinking behaviour impacts adolescent use – advertisements/ billboards  Campaigns that promote moderate drinking and show real life situations of consequences of heavy drinking for an individual and the community

8 Example Strategy: Make an agreement with their parents about the amount of alcohol they are able to drink at parties on any one occasion Explain how this strategy will bring about healthier outcomes for all individuals If an adolescent has an agreement that their friends are aware of, their friends will less likely pressure them into drinking more. Adolescents are able to feel satisfied about drinking with friends, feel a sense of belonging whilst maintaining a responsible level of drinking.
