Overview: 1. What is animal care? 2. Why animal care? 3. What can you do?
What is Animal Care?: Definition The term can be understood using the “Five Freedoms” concept: Freedom from thirst and hunger Freedom from discomfort Freedom from pain, injury and disease Freedom from fear and distress Freedom to express most normal behavior
Why Animal Care? "A plaint of guiltless hurt doth pierce the sky." -CS Lewis Cannot protest against the cruelty. We need to step in!
Animal Cruelty The crime of inflicting physical pain, suffering or death on an animal, usually a tame one, beyond necessity for discipline. Types of animal cruelty: 1. Intentional cruelty 2. Unintentional cruelty
The Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960 It shall be the duty of every person having the care or charge of any animal to take all reasonable measures to ensure the well-being of such animal and to prevent the infliction upon such animal of unnecessary pain or suffering.
FAUNA POLICE Established by Mr. Abhinav Srihan in 2010. Philosophy – Treat rescued animals physically as well as emotionally 2 centres in Delhi: Dogs’ Inn (Noida) & Birds’ Aviary (Mayur Vihar). Operate a bird helpline number as well. Radically different from other animal care centres.
Dogs’ Inn Located in Sector 52, Hoshiarpur (Noida) Around 10 rescued dogs at a given time. Usually, the rescued dogs are sick or abandoned by their previous owners. They get the dogs treated, incurring all the costs in the process. The centre has many facilities, like air coolers & a garden area for dogs to play.
Note the following : Leash free zone Healthy environment Spacious Various dog varieties
Cage v/s Aviary An aviary is a large enclosure mimicking a natural environment for the containment of birds. Aviaries provide the bird a more natural environment to grow in. The birds which mature in an aviary learn basic skills like flying & pecking. Socializing skills among other birds can only be developed in an aviary.
What Can YOU do? Volunteer at an animal care centre like SGACC, Friendicoes or Fauna Police. In summers, keep water for birds outside your homes. Adopt dogs & cats, but not birds (if you can’t afford a aviary). Simple acts like switching to soy/almond milk (which is anyways more healthier).
Volunteering Opportunities Home Checks before a dog’s adoption Urgent Rescue Operations Undertake Animal First Aid You can visit the Dogs’ Inn regularly and help them in managing the dogs if you live in and around Noida.
Exposure Trip Enough of Preaching! This weekend, we plan to take some interested volunteers on an exposure trip to get some hands on experience. The details would be sent through a mailer!
