5 Bureau of Nutrition and Physical Activity Leadership for a Healthy Arizona Schools Technical assistance and training for strengthening School Health Councils and Local Wellness Policies.

6 Bureau of Nutrition and Physical Activity Leadership for a Healthy Arizona Schools Statewide policy initiatives to increase awareness, access, and social support for physical activity will be implemented through School Health Councils and enhanced Local Wellness Policies.

7 Bureau of Nutrition and Physical Activity Leadership for a Healthy Arizona School Health Council Schools statewide will adopt policies to promote and increase access to healthy foods and beverages and physical activity including implementing recess before lunch, daily PA breaks, the promotion of water consumption, strategic pricing of nutrient dense foods, offering fruits and non-fried vegetables as competitive foods, and farm to school programs through the establishment of school health councils and assessment of their health environments.

8 Bureau of Nutrition and Physical Activity Leadership for a Healthy Arizona Safe Routes to School Health Impact Assessments Safe Routes to School (SRTS) programs provide evidence that students who walk or cycle to school have lower body mass indexes and achieve greater amounts of daily physical activity.

9 Bureau of Nutrition and Physical Activity Leadership for a Healthy Arizona Safe Routes to School Health Impact Assessments Development of health impact assessments (HIA) and requiring schools to complete the HIA when applying for SRTS program funds. Design a web-portal connecting the assessments with education and technical assistance on how to create or improve the built environment for a healthy community.

12 Bureau of Nutrition and Physical Activity Leadership for a Healthy Arizona Proposal The Arizona Department of Health Services (ADHS) is proposing policy and environmental changes increasing access to and support of local farms and farmers markets and support for community gardens to improve nutrition, physical activity, community engagement, safety, state economic vitality, and provide environmental benefits to Arizona.

15 Bureau of Nutrition and Physical Activity Leadership for a Healthy Arizona Supporting the Procurement of Locally Grown Fruits and Vegetables Arizona has a strong agricultural foundation, but fewer farmers markets and fewer census tracts with healthier food retailers in or near each tract. By creating the environment to connect local agriculture with community needs to increase access to fresh fruits and vegetables, we will improve the nutrition status of Arizonans.
