3 History of states joining US In 1800 there were 8 free and 8 slave states –1803- Ohio Free (9-8 Free) –1812- Louisiana- Slave (9-9 =) –1816- Indiana- Free (10-9 Free) –1817- Mississippi- Slave (10-10 =) –1818- Illinois- Free (11-10 Free) –1819- Alabama- Slave (11-11 =)

4 Missouri Debate… 1820 Missouri has 60,000 people They ask to join country as slave state –Why would this create a problem?? Arguments in congress South threatens to secede
