Nationalism & Compromise By Mr. Linder Chapter 8 Section 2
Nationalism Is a feeling of pride and loyalty to a nation. It is kind of like the self-esteem of a nation
Henry Clay Henry Clay was a Representative from Kentucky. He was a STRONG supporter of Nationalism / Patriotism.
Sectionalism & Missouri Sectionalism – Disagreements between different regions of the country. The North is not in agreement with the South over slavery! Missouri wants to become a state!
Slave State or Free State? Union (U.S.) had 22 states. 11 Free (non-slave) and 11 slave states. Adding Missouri messes up the balance of “power”.
Missouri Compromise – Clay’s Idea! Missouri will be a Slave State Maine will be a “free” or non-slave state. Any new state north of the southern Missouri border (36-30’ N) will be a free state. People still not too happy about this!
