WHAT IS GREEN IMPACT? the Green Impact Scheme is an environmental awards programme run by the National Union of Students. It currently operates in more than 60 universities across the UK and within the University of Sheffield there are 35 participating departments The Green Impact Scheme is about more than turning off a few lights – it is about transforming our department to make it ethnical, environmentally friendly and socially responsible. We think it is a worthwhile enterprise – and we hope that you do too The Department of Archaeology has formed a Green Impact Group to champion the initiative and instigate changes within the department. The group is formed of staff and students from across the department. Anyone can join & everyone is welcome!
DEPARTMENT RECYCLING Does the general waste go to the landfill? NO Materials are sorted by a machine at MRF. So we need just little effort from you! Use the BLACK bin for: · kitchen glassware and crockery · tissues and handtowels ·soiled paper and card food packaging (e.g. sandwiches boxes and coffee cups) · food waste Use the BLUE bin for · paper · card · glass · plastics · tins, cans and foil
DEPARTMENT RECYCLING Batteries can be sent for recycling in two ways. 1) They can be taken to the department collection point(technicians office), email email@example.com for large collections. 2) Small amounts of batteries can be sent by internal post to the Environment Officer. Waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) computers, PC peripherals etc, can be given to the technicians or booked in at the following website. http://www.sheffield.ac.uk/efm/property_business_services/recycling andwaste-disposal/weee Mobile Phones that are for university use, can be sent to the Voice and Data Team to be recycled. Voice and Data Team, CiCS Computing Centre, 8-20 Hounsfield Road, Sheffield. S3 7RF. The package should be clearly labelled for reuse / recycling.
PAPER We are trying out the use of 100% Recycled Paper for printing. The recycled paper is placed in the staff printer in Northgate. Please, use with care, print double sided, re-use scrape paper or recycle it when possible!
FAIRTRADE FOOD PRODUCTS Fair trade is an organized social movement that aims to help producers in developing countries to make better trading conditions and promote sustainability. As part of our Green Impact Initiative, we try, wherever possible, to ensure that our refreshments are fairtrade, local, or ethically sourced. PLEASE DO THE SAME!

Thinking of cycling to work over the coming spring or summer? Hopefully it will warm up a little more - but we're seeing the first signs of spring on the way! There are a few places in the university that you can get a helping hand with all things to do with bicycles. The following university webpage has help with bikes and advice. http://www.sheffield.ac.uk/efm/property_business_services/transport/cycling There is help from the `Cycle Hut', that offers help and advice, as well as servicing and repairs. http://www.sheffield.ac.uk/efm/property_business_services/transport/cycling There are also showers scattered around the campus for cyclists. But you may have to arrange access with the department concerned. http://www.sheffield.ac.uk/cycleforum/showers http://www.sheffield.ac.uk/cycleforum/showers Some of the showers are pretty close to us! …or GO BIKING!
