McDonald's is the largest and best-known global food service retailer with more than 30,000 restaurants in 121 countries.

Russia

RUSSIA: The food is basically the same as the U.S. but converted to rubles. These restaurants are EXTREMELY busy and you have to wait to find a place to sit. McDonald’s is a good place to visit if your Russian isn’t very good because all you have to do is simply point to the menu board and hold up the appropriate number of fingers for the value meal you wish to order.

Fast-food restaurants are very popular in Saudi Arabia, and western chains have local owners and managers. Since women cannot drive in Saudi Arabia, many restaurants offer free home delivery. See the McDonald's van parked out front?

Oman

McArabia: grilled chicken sandwich on Arab bread with lettuce, tomatoes, and Arab sauce

Beijing, China

Rice-loving Hong Kong, has - of course - Rice Burgers, where the burgers are in between, not burger buns, but two patties of glutinous riceHong Kong

Afghanistan Iraq

Luckily there is no McDonald's yet in Ghana. As a talisman to ward the transnational corporation off, they sarcastically built this Independence Arch in the trademark golden arches shape.

Hmmm…. Why do companies frequently expand their business operations into other countries? What are the benefits of doing business in other countries? Drawbacks?

What factors prompted McDonald’s to open restaurants outside the U.S.? How have social and cultural factors affected the company’s international business activities? What risks has the company faced when opening restaurants in other countries? What actions would you suggest for McDonald’s to continue to be successful in international business?
