1:22a, having purified your souls by your obedience to the truth –Purified, a ref. to baptism; preparation (3-12) 1:22b, for a sincere brotherly love –They had committed for salvation –God had that and more in mind. 1 Tim. 1:5-6, the goal – the object of ambition, the aim of the teacher and the text – is love. –Brotherly. The work starts at baptism.
1:22c, love… –Peter’s conclusion –What else would we expect: Fulfill your destiny; perform the function you were created to perform –Earnestly, fervently – boiling
1:23-25, –Since…, reminders motivate: Grass withers, symbolizing life on earth – here for a season But the word endures forever, the Word would outlast them –This has been confirmed: These Christians have been dead for 2000 years. –Appl.: Make hay while the sun shines.

Slander The act of speaking ill of another; injurious Tearing down others to make self look good Illus.: 2 S á m. 16:3; gossip P é ld. 10:18, he who spreads slander is a fool…. –Not a great legacy; so much for looking good.
