Raising aspiration and sustainable job outcomes for care leavers: Higher education Emma Corbett Participation Officer, The Who Cares? Trust 9 th May 2013

Education is the engine of opportunity that offers all children the prospect of transcending the circumstances of their birth and the promise of a better life. Edward Timpson MP, Launch of the Children and Families Bill, February 2013

The Who Cares? Trust  We have been looking at the education of looked-after children and care leavers since our charity formed in 1992.  Recent publications on education  Open Doors, Open Minds  The H.E. Handbook  Finding your way  Forthcoming analysis of local authority higher education finance policies

What the numbers say  In 2012, what percentage of looked-after children achieved five or more GCSEs at A* - C including English and mathematics?

What the numbers say  In 2012, there were 6,610 19 year olds who had been in care when they were 16. How many of these were in higher education?

A brighter future?  What percentage of young people that The Who Cares? Trust spoke to said they wanted to go to university?

What support is out there?  From local authorities  Legal duties to provide support for care leavers under the age of 25 who wish to go into higher education, including specific entitlements to vacation accommodation and a £2,000 Higher Education Bursary  From higher education institutions  Under new student finance arrangements there is a clear expectation that HEIs will provide additional support for vulnerable groups to access higher education.
