3 Let’s get to know him a little better.

6 What we just did… We just focused on word meaning to find the word that does not belong. Is there a different thing we could focus on in order to find the word that does not belong?

Step 2: Decide how words are related (what does each word mean?) Think spots and a low growl… An orange and black fellows. King of the jungle… ROAR! Big snake. Think Adam and Eve. All are types of cats Step 3: Decide which word does not belong. That’s your answer!

All three of these words are connected by their meaning. Reconnaissance means to survey an enemy’s land or to go on a mission to recover something. Therefore, reconnaissance does not belong.

21 2 Which word does not belong? a. pompous b. meek c. humble d. inferior Meek means timid and submissive, humble means being of lower importance, and inferior means to be not as good as those around you. All three of these words are connected by their meaning. Pompous means to arrogant and full of yourself. Therefore, pompous does not belong.

22 3 Which word does not belong? a. lie b. fallacy c. myth d. principle To lie is to say something false on purpose, a fallacy is something that is false (like a mistaken belief), and a myth is a widely accepted false idea. All three of these words are connected by their meaning. A principle is a fundamental truth at the foundation of an idea or organization. Therefore, principle does not belong.

23 4 Which word does not belong? a. solve b. decipher c. deduce d. conceal Solve means to find the solution to a problem, decipher means to make sense of something confusing (decode), and deduce means to take meaning from something through reasoning. All three of these words are connected by their meaning. Conceal means to hide. Therefore, conceal does not belong.

24 5 Which word does not belong? a. freedom b. unrestrained c. duress d. liberty Freedom is the state of being free to act as you wish, unrestrained means not held back (un = not, therefore unrestrained means NOT restrained), and liberty is synonymous with freedom. All three of these words are connected by their meaning. Duress means to feel extreme stress from being limited in your freedom. Therefore, duress does not belong.

25 6 Which word does not belong? a. barge b. airplane c. tugboat d. cruise ship A barge is a large utility ship used to transport goods, a tug boat is a smaller boat that is used to pull other boats behind it, and a cruise ship is used to leisurely transport people through the sea. All three of these words are connected by their category. An airplane is used to transport people and cargo through the air. Therefore, airplane does not belong.

26 7 Which word does not belong? a. apprehend b. grasp c. elude d. capture To apprehend is to catch (as in a criminal), to grasp is to grab with your hand, and to capture is to take something into your control by force. All three of these words are connected by their category. Elude means to escape or not be seen. Therefore, elude does not belong.

27 8 Which word does not belong? a. vast b. minimal c. endless d. boundless Vast means very large or wide in range, endless means to be seemingly without end, and boundless means to have no obvious limits. All three of these words are connected by their meaning. Minimal means the smallest amount needed for something. Therefore, minimal does not belong.
