Laptop Integration Information Technologies - Sweetwater County School District #1 August 30th, Caring for Your Laptop

Laptop Integration Information Technologies - Sweetwater County School District #1 August 30th, How to Handle Your Laptop Always carry your laptop in a secure manner. Never walk around with your laptop open. Lock your laptop down at all times. Use your Carrying Case. Never leave your Laptop in your Car.

Laptop Integration Information Technologies - Sweetwater County School District #1 August 30th, Locking Your Laptop You have been provided a cable lock to keep your laptop secure at all times - Use It!! If your laptop is stolen and it was not locked down - you are responsible to pay for the replacement. Loop your cable lock through a non-movable object. Or through an area that does not allow for easy removal of the lock. You can lock your laptop to one of the new carts. It will look very suspicious if someone is wheeling your laptop out the door.

Laptop Integration Information Technologies - Sweetwater County School District #1 August 30th, Lock & Key Each cable lock and key is unique. The district has provided you with one key for your cable lock. Please keep track of the Key. If you lose the Key, there is a $20 charge to have it replaced.

Laptop Integration Information Technologies - Sweetwater County School District #1 August 30th, Heating & Freezing Your Laptop Just like humans - electronics do not react well to extreme heat and/or extreme cold. Therefore, NEVER leave your laptop in your car. If you have to run into the store after work - place your laptop(within its case) in the trunk of your car - keep it out of sight. Never leave it in your car for extended periods of time.

Laptop Integration Information Technologies - Sweetwater County School District #1 August 30th, Taking Your Laptop to Dinner Contrary to popular belief - laptops DO NOT need to be fed. Please do not eat directly over your laptop or have liquids right next to your laptop. In short, Keep it Clean, Keep it Dry and Keep it away from the Chicken Fettuccini.

Laptop Integration Information Technologies - Sweetwater County School District #1 August 30th, Your Laptop Case The case we have provided you for your laptop is specially engineered to protect your laptop. The sides of the case are re-enforced - just like a steel toed boot. If you decided to use your own case it MUST have this same feature so we protect the equipment.

Laptop Integration Information Technologies - Sweetwater County School District #1 August 30th, Demonstration Using the Case Strapping your laptop in

Laptop Integration Information Technologies - Sweetwater County School District #1 August 30th, Stuffing Your Laptop Case Your laptop case has many slot and pockets to assist with carrying your laptop as well as some of your school work - use them wisely. Over stuffing your laptop case can and will place extra pressure on the top of the laptop and you could crack the LCD Display.

Laptop Integration Information Technologies - Sweetwater County School District #1 August 30th, Baking the Laptop in the Case Please do not leave your laptop turned on and then place it in the case. This will cause your laptop to overheat. Your laptop has built in fans to keep it cool. If it is turn on in a confined area, the surrounding area will heat up and damage the electronics within your laptop.

Laptop Integration Information Technologies - Sweetwater County School District #1 August 30th, I Dropped My Laptop If you drop your laptop, do the following: Inspect for damage Write yourself a short note on what happened If your laptop has damage or will not start, contact one of the members of the IT Staff.

Laptop Integration Information Technologies - Sweetwater County School District #1 August 30th, Cleaning Your Laptop Our laptops are white - they are bound to get dirty from time to time. Please help us keep them clean. You may wipe the surface off with a mild cleaner and a soft cloth. Spray the cloth with the cleaner first - never spray liquids onto your laptop. DO NOT attempt to clean the LCD screen - contact a member of the IT Staff and they will help you clean your LCD screen.

Laptop Integration Information Technologies - Sweetwater County School District #1 August 30th, My Science Experiment Please help us keep the keyboards and computers clean. Keyboards are one of our major sources of bacteria and disease transmission. If it looks bad, clean it. Wash your hands frequently.

Laptop Integration Information Technologies - Sweetwater County School District #1 August 30th, Lending Out Your Laptop Never allow non-district personnel to access or use your laptop/computer. We must ensure adherence to FERPA (Family Education Rights and Protection Act). Protect our students and their data. Refer to policy GBCE for further details regarding your laptop and network access. (Brightness can be found on your F1 and F2 keys) We do not recommend playing CDs or DVDs while on battery power - battery will drain very quickly. Powering other devices via USB or Firewire ports will also reduce available battery time.

Laptop Integration Information Technologies - Sweetwater County School District #1 August 30th, Turn It On Directly above the keyboard on the upper right hand side is the power button. Depress this button once and the machine should turn on. If your machine does not turn on - check to make sure you are plugged in and/or the battery is fully charged.

Laptop Integration Information Technologies - Sweetwater County School District #1 August 30th, Connecting to the Network As we start the school year, please use the Red Ethernet cord to plug into the Network. You can connect wirelessly, however we do not want to overwhelm the current wireless system - leave the wireless for the student mobile labs. Sept. through Nov. we will be upgrading our wireless - once that is complete, then you are welcome to connect via wireless.

Laptop Integration Information Technologies - Sweetwater County School District #1 August 30th, Connecting to the Network, cont. Your computer should automatically connect to the network. When you plug your red cord in and turn your machine on, it signals the network that you are ready to connect. The network responds by giving your machine a network address, thus allowing you to connect to district servers, and the internet.

Laptop Integration Information Technologies - Sweetwater County School District #1 August 30th, Connecting via Wireless Connecting your computer to our wireless environments is fairly simple. In the upper right hand portion of your screen on the menu bar, you will see an icon with four circular lines forming what look like a radio signal. Click on this icon - make sure Airport is turned on and select the wireless environment from the list presented. You will be prompted to enter a password. Use this same procedure for connecting to wireless environments outside of school.

Laptop Integration Information Technologies - Sweetwater County School District #1 August 30th, Network Reminders When you connect to the network with your red cord (aka. The only way to correct this is to repair it. To eject a CD, either drag it to the Trash Can or use the CD Eject button - top right button on the keyboard. You may also use Open Apple + E.

Laptop Integration Information Technologies - Sweetwater County School District #1 August 30th, Audio Keys Your F3 key will turn your speakers off Your F4 key will turn your speakers down Your F5 Key will turn your speakers up

Laptop Integration Information Technologies - Sweetwater County School District #1 August 30th, Its Stuck and Won’t Respond From time to time, applications (programs) can stop responding. If this happens to you and you cannot get the application to quit normally, you may have to use the Force Quit. Force Quit can be found under the Blue Apple (upper left corner) - Select Force Quit and you will be presented a list of applications running on your machine. Select the Application that is not responding and then click the Force Quit Button (lower right of the pop up window). Forcing Quitting an application will cause you to lose unsaved data.
