3 Jamestown First permanent settlement by the English in Virginia it was established in 1607 Named after King James “Thus we lived for the space of five months in this miserable distress… our men night and day groaning in every corner of the fort, most pitiful to hear. If there were and conscience in men, it would make their hearts to bleed to hear the pitiful murmuring and outcries of our sick men for relief, every might and day for the space of six weeks: some departing out of the World, many times three or four in a night; in the morning their bodies trailed out of their cabins like dogs, to be buried.” –A Jamestown Colonist

6 New Netherland Dutch holdings in North America It was around the Hudson river, Bay and Straight Settled in 1609 The Dutch were searching for a north west sea route to Asia

7 French and Indian War Battle between French and British battle The Indians and Native Americans were on the French side They both used their European allies to fight against each other The British won the battle and gained control of most of North America

8 How did the British Beat the French? The British colonist helped the British army defeat the French Eventually the French surrendered their colonial holdings
