2 The Olive Branch Petition  John Dickenson wanted to send loyal message to king  Was very polite and asked for  A cease fire at Boston  Repeal of Coercive Acts  Negotiations to establish guarantees of American Rights  Reached London along with the news of the formation of the Continental Army and the battle fought outside Boston  Showed Congresses hope that relations with Britain could be improved

3 Military Uncertainty  Colonist lost Breed’s Hill but gave the British massive casualties  Colonist capture of Fort Ticonderoga  Partial success in invading Canada only to have Britain drive Continental Army out  Failed British seize of Charles Town

4 Change Towards Independence  Common Sense had caused more colonist to support war  Rhode Island had declared Independence in May 1776  In April NC authorized its delegates to vote for Independence  This encouraged other colonies to support separation
