3 Benefitting the farmers At least 50%of total foreign investment will be in villages. Transform rural India through improved agro processing and cold chain. Farm produce will reach store directly thereby reducing wastage. Farmers will get their due in the form of higher prices. Creating more jobs Over 1 crore new jobs will be created. FDI-backed retailers will source 30% of all their products from small scale sector. New manufacturing opportunities will open for the nation’s micro, small and medium enterprises. The nation’s youth will benefit from numerous employment opportunities in this sector. Distinct Indian Imprint Foreign investors allowed only up to 51% ownership, as opposed to other countries that allow 100% Retail stores can be established in cities across the country, with a minimum population of 10 lakhs. Smaller states have the right to make their decision. 50% foreign investment in villages for infrastructure creation. Benefitting the Consumers Farm produce will reach stores directly resulting in good quality and lower prices. FOREIGN DIRECT INVESTMENT IN RETAIL

4 The constitution of India confers equal right on all states Agrarian and fruit and vegetables producing states have demanded implementation. Decision to implement and benefit from the policy is left to the states. Source: Ministry of Commerce and Industry Government of India MythReality Kiranas and retailers will lose Retailers will benefit from existing policy of sourcing their requirements from wholesale cash & carry stores at a discount. In countries such as China, Thailand, Indonesia, Brazil, Singapore, Argentina & Chile where there are no caps for FDI and where there no conditions, small retail stores have flourished, leading to more employment. The retail sector will be controlled by foreign stores The FDI- backed stores can only operate in cities and every state has the freedom to allow or disallow FDI-backed retail investment FDI in multi brand retail may result in job losses Contrary to this mistaken belief, FDI in multi brand retail will generate new employment opportunities, resulting in 1 crore new jobs. Farmers will be exploited and will lose their fields and crops to foreign investors On the contrary, farmers will receive better remuneration for their produce & will benefits from additional job opportunities resulting in overall improvement in their quality of life. The real story behind FDI myths
