1 D ISASTER H EALTH I NFORMATION O UTREACH P ARTNERSHIP Monroe County Department of Public Health and The Arnett Branch of the Rochester Public Library

3 O BJECTIVES Create a collection of public health materials to be held at the Arnett Branch of the Rochester Public Library for public access. Teach library staff about the resources available. Teach the residents of the 19 th Ward the importance of disaster preparedness and how to find reliable sources of information to answer questions about their health. Tell emergency response planners about the wealth of informatics resources available through the public library and why partnering is beneficial.

4 M ETHOD Developed acquisition list of materials, purchased books for collection. Developed curriculum for public audience one hour in length with take-aways for incentive. Conduct outreach to advertise class for residents. Train library staff about disaster preparedness and the resources available. Share program model with emergency preparedness planners at quarterly Task Force meeting.

5 O UTCOMES 52 books/DVDs were purchased to begin the collection; some reference, some circulated Training was provided to library staff. 62 residents of the 19 th Ward were provided with training. Post-grant training will be provided to the local boy scout troop and an older adult church group after the grant has ended. Participants were provided with a personal preparedness kit to begin their family emergency kit. A briefing was provided to 36 emergency preparedness planners at the Public health preparedness Task Force.

6 O UTCOMES (2) Participant feedback indicates that residents trust information they obtain at or through their library, an important way for local health officials to reach potentially resistant audiences.
