Load Screening Every CCDD load must not be accepted unless it passes screening for hydrocarbon contaminants with a PID/FID or other IEPA approved device. A visual inspection of material should be performed prior to determination of how many samples should be collected for screening. An olfactory inspection should also be performed to determine if there are any suspicious odors in the load.

Visual Inspection

Use of the Scaffold or Catwalk

Visual Inspection

Load Screening If there are no distinct changes in color, consistency, or moisture, representative sampling should be performed. In cases where the material contains various types of soil, a sample should be taken from each type of soil to represent the entire load. Do not take composite samples from the single load of material.

Representative Sample Collection Collect a representative sample by inserting a collection device (probe or shovel) into the load. Place the sample in an area away from any exhaust fumes. If possible, bring the sample inside. Remember that sample must be analyzed where background was recorded on PID.

Sample Collection

Representative Sampling

PID Screening Place the tip of the PID near the edge of the material collected with the sampling device. Record the peak measurement shown on the PID. If the PID shows a reading greater than the margin of error, the material could be contaminated and that load should be rejected. Results must be documented.

Documentation of Inspection Results The documentation for each inspection must included the following: Date and Time of the Inspection Name of the Hauling Company Vehicle Identification Number or License Plate Number Source of the CCDD Results of Inspection Inspector Name

Sample Inspection Log DateTimeName of Trucking Company Vehicle ID Number CCDD Source Inspection Results (Accept/Reject) Inspector Name
