1 Kauri – About Kauri Kauri are one of the largest rainforest trees on earth They are to New Zealand what the pyramids are to Egypt and Stonehenge is to England They're worth more than tourism, it's about our identity KAURI DIEBACK PROGRAMME PARTNERS The creation myth Rangi and Papa clung together, trapping the children they had made in a land of darkness. The strongest child Tane mahuta pushed his parents apart to bring light to the land and allow his children to flourish. The Te Roroa iwi of Waipoua forest believe Tane's legs were the giant trunks of kauri.

2 What is Kauri Dieback? Kauri dieback is the disease caused by Phytophthora Taxon Agathis (PTA). Identified in 2008 as a distinct and previously undescribed species of Phytophthora. Kauri dieback is specific to New Zealand kauri and can kill trees of all ages. KAURI DIEBACK PROGRAMME PARTNERS

10 How do We Kill It? Oospore Zoospore KAURI DIEBACK PROGRAMME PARTNERS Cook at +70c for 20+ mins microns in size Resistant to: Pesticides Heat and Cold Lies dormant for 20+ years Carried in soil, vegetation, faeces Can be hidden in between soil particles

Resistant to: Pesticides Heat Cold Lies dormant for 20+ years Carried in soil, vegetation, faeces Use Trigene Disinfectant 10 to 20 micron in size Broad spectrum disinfectant non-toxic, non-corrosive, biodegradable and environmentally friendly.

12 How do we Contain it? Without any treatment or control tools the only way is to contain the disease and stop the spread. KAURI DIEBACK PROGRAMME PARTNERS Make sure shoes, tyres and equipment are cleaned to remove all soil and plant material BEFORE AND AFTER visiting kauri forest Use cleaning stations to scrub to remove all soil and spray with disinfectant. Stay on the highway and off kauri roots

13 How do we Contain it? Without any treatment or control tools the only way is to contain the disease and stop the spread. KAURI DIEBACK PROGRAMME PARTNERS Collect all material arising's and spoil from site Take to secure landfill site licensed for PTA OR - Use excavated material on site – take nothing away
