4 Port Moresby: Safe City Programme Aim: create safe, clean, and inclusive markets for women and men to feel free and empowered.

5 Why markets? Agriculture - key income stream for 86% of the population in PNG 55% of women reported experiencing some form of violence in the previous 12 months while at the market. 22% females report experiencing more than one incident of SV in the market. 64% of females and males reported witnessing some form of SV in the market. SV was not the only problem, extortion, theft, ethnic clashes and other forms of violence. Local population not going to markets and virtually no tourism in markets due to safety concerns Health and sanitation concerns, lack of maintenance and planning Markets are social spaces and provide an opportunity to build and strengthen communities
