Applied Genetics: Copy these alleles down Allele key: – Widow’s peak: W=Widow’s peak w=no widow’s peak – Attached/free earlobes: E=Free earlobes e=attached earlobes – Blood types I A =type A I B =type B i=type O

Who’s the daddy? There has been a polar vortex that made snowmageddon look like a flurry. The University of Chicago’s pediatric ward has a new nurse (Nurse Jackie) who, in her hurry to evacuate the hospital, forgot to put ID bracelets on the newborn babies! You need to use your knowledge of genetics and heredity to deliver the babies to their correct parents.

What do the babies look like? Baby #1 – No Widow’s peak – Attached Earlobes – Blood type: A Baby #2 – Widow’s Peak – Attached Earlobes – Blood type: O Baby #3 – Widow’s Peak – Free Earlobes – Blood type: B For each phenotype, we’ll need to establish the POTENTIAL genotypes

Why can’t we just do a genetic test?!? A)There’s no power B)There’s no time! C)That would be missing the whole point of applying our knowledge of genetics!!!

Which babies can possibly belong to the Leel’s?

What terms should we know at this point? Alleles DNA base Chromosomes Chromatids Co-dominance Crossing over DNA Dominant Genes Gene expression Genetic variation Genetics Genome Genotype Heredity Heterozygous Homozygous Hybrid Meiosis Mitosis Mutations Phenotype Protein Recessive RNA Trait

What’s our net unit about? Genetic MANIPULATION

Genetic Testing position paper Due typed by Wednesday (Our next unit is also about genetics) – Attached: Outline (also typed) including Pg 1: Thesis/position Pg 2: Support 1 Pg 3: Support 2 Pg 4: Support 3 Pg 5: Counterargument Pg 6: Counterargument Pg 7: Conclusion (referring back to both arguments and counterarguments)

Example of outline – Intro  Position: – Support 1: – Support 2: – Support 3: – Counterargument: – Conclusion:

Example of outline – Intro  Position: I am for genetic testing – Support 1: Source A, “Provides a wealth of information” – Support 2: Source A, “Ability to plan for unavoidable issues” – Support 3: Source A, “Genetic disease as social burden.” – Counterargument: Source C  Positive perspectives of DS parents – Counterargument: Source C  ~90% of women given a DS diagnosis choose abortion – Conclusion: I am for genetic testing because it provides information, the ability to plan for unavoidable issues, and the choice to avoid a social burden. One could argue against this positive by sharing the positive perspectives from parents of DS children, and pointing out that genetic testing often leads to abortion.
