Urban Introduction Higher Urban Traffic Congestion[Date] Today I will: - Know the problems with traffic in Glasgow’s CBD and know how they have been tackled. What are some of the problems with traffic ?
Urban Introduction Higher Urban How long does it take you to get to school in the morning?
Urban Introduction Higher Urban As Glasgow grew rapidly into the main commercial and industrial centre of Scotland, and as car ownership and use of lorries for transporting goods increased dramatically from about the 1950s onwards, the city began to suffer more and more from the build up of traffic. Congestion, noise, air pollution, increased travel time and cost to business became major problems. The city, like most others, was in danger of grinding to a halt. The politicians and planners had to come up with solutions to ease traffic congestion. See page 17 of the Summary Notes
Urban Introduction Higher Urban Traffic Solutions: Glasgow Take a new double page in your jotter and in the middle write: You are going to construct a mind map.
Urban Introduction Higher Urban One Way Streets: Traffic only in one direction for example, Hope Street Effectiveness: Can cause confusion
Urban Introduction Higher Urban Bridges and tunnels such as Clyde Tunnel: Again to divert traffic Effectiveness: Very helpful at alleviating congestion
Urban Introduction Higher Urban M8 and M74: This means that traffic ‘misses’ the CBD. Effectiveness: Very helpful, jams though on the Kingston Bridge.
Urban Introduction Higher Urban Pedestrianisation: Roads for only pedestrians. Effectiveness: Increases congestion elsewhere.
Urban Introduction Higher Urban Encourage use of public transport in the city: To reduce car traffic Effectiveness: Not as convenient for people
Urban Introduction Higher Urban Reduce Street Parking: high parking charges through use of parking meters, parking permits, traffic wardens; To reduce car traffic Effectiveness: Unpopular but effectively reduces traffic
Urban Introduction Higher Urban Park and Ride: Such as Shields Rad Underground Effectiveness: People still have convenience of car
