Prendre = to take, to have (This verb is irregular. It does not follow a pattern and you will have to memorize each word.) je prendsnous prenons tu prendsvous prenez il prendils prennent elle prendelles prennent on prend Negative: Je ne prends pas…

There are other verbs that follow the same pattern as prendre. Apprendre (to learn) J’apprends Tu apprends Il/elle/on apprend Nous apprenons Vous apprenez Ils/elles apprennent Comprendre (to understand) Je comprends Tu comprends Il/elle/on comprend Nous comprenons Vous comprenez Ils/elles comprennent

Boire = to drink (This verb is irregular) Je boisNous buvons Tu boisVous buvez Il boitils boivent Elle boitelles boivent On boit Negative: Nous ne buvons pas de Coca.

To form the partitive, use the preposition de followed by a definite article. (Sometimes a contraction will form which will change the word slightly.) Partitives – In French, partitive articles are used to express some or any. Je bois du thé chaud. I drink (some) hot tea. Elle prend de l’eau? Is she having (some) water?

The following are contractions for the partitive de: de + le = du de + la = de la de + l’ = de l’ de + les = des

Partitive articles are only used with non- count nouns (nouns whose quantity cannot be expressed by a number). Tu prends de la soupe tous les jours. Tu prends une banane, aussi. You have (some) soup every day. You have a banana, too.

To give a negative response to a question asked using the partitive structure, always use ne…pas de. Est-ce qu’il a du lait? Does he have any milk? Non, il n’a pas de lait. No, he doesn’t have any milk.

Regular –ir verbs Like regular –er verbs, there are several verbs that end in “–ir” that follow a pattern. You have to take off the “-ir” on the infinitive and put the new ending on to conjugate the verb. (**Note: Not ALL verbs that end in –ir are automatically “regular –ir verbs”…like avoir, for example.)

Je finis Tu finis Il finit Elle finit On finit Nous finissons Finir = to finish (Regular –ir verb) Vous finissez Ils finissent Elles finissent Negative: Nous ne finissons pas la pizza.

Other regular –ir verbs will be conjugated the same way. (Remove the –ir and add the new ending. ) Choisir = to choose Je choisis Tu choisis Il choisit Elle choisit On choisit Nous choisissons Vous choisissez Ils choisissent Elles choisissent

Here are some other regular –ir verbs finir choisir grandir

grossir maigrir obéir

réagir réfléchir (à) réussir (à)

rougir vieillir
