2 About the Test  The GRE General Exam is an admissions test for graduate or business school  Contains six sections  Critical Thinking and Analytical Writing  Verbal Reasoning  Quantitative Reasoning

3 Critical Thinking and Analytical Writing  1 section which includes 2 separately timed tasks—each 30 minutes in length  0-6 score scale in ½ increments Measures your critical thinking and analytical writing skills

4 Verbal Reasoning  2 sections—each 30 minutes in length  20 questions each section  130-170 score scale Measures your ability to analyze and evaluate written material, analyze relationships among component parts of sentences, and recognize relationships among words and concepts

5 Quantitative Reasoning  2 sections—each 35 minutes in length  Online calculator is available  130-170 score scale Measures your problem-solving ability, focusing on basic concepts of arithmetic, algebra, geometry and data analysis

6 Unidentified Section  1 section  Does not count towards your score OR Identified Research Section  1 section  Does not count towards your score Follow the directions presented on the screen before each section

8 Register for the Test  In the United States the GRE General Test is given only computer-based  Register online at www.ets.org, by phone (1-800-473-2255), or by mail.  GRE candidates with disabilities—accommodations are available, but you must register through disability services at 1-800-967-1139  Cost is $185.00 this must be paid during registration

10 Continued…  Regardless of how you register, you must create a GRE account with a username and password. This account allows you to view your scores  Allow for a 4.5 hour block of time  Overall testing time is about 3 hours and 45 minutes. The additional time allows for the tutorial  Monetary penalties for rescheduling or canceling your appointment

12 Test Day  Report to the testing center 30 minutes prior to your appointment time  Dress so you can adapt to any temperature  You will be required to show 1 ID. This ID must be government issued, current, contain your name, your picture, and your signature. This is all verified during check-in  Driver’s license  Passport (If you are testing outside the country of your citizenship you must present a passport)  Military ID  A complete list of acceptable IDs can be found on the GRE website The name on your ID must match our roster. When registering be sure that the spelling of your name matches the name printed on the ID you will be using. If this information does not match (marriage, divorce etc.) you will not be permitted to test and your test fee will be forfeited If acceptable ID is not presented you will not be able to test

13 Test Day  During check-in you will be asked to read Prometric Testing Center Regulations  You will be asked to read and sign an ETS Confidentiality Statement  You will be asked to lock all your personal belongings away This includes:  All electronic equipment—watches—coats—hats—food—drinks— purses—wallets—briefcases—notebooks–backpacks  You will be asked to turn your pockets inside out  You will be asked to lift your pant legs above your ankles  You will be scanned before entering the testing area  All testing center areas are audio and video recorded  Administrators physically walk through the testing area frequently  You will be given 1scratch paper booklet, 2 pencils, and noise reduction headphones Continued…

15 Scores  As part of your test fee, upon completion of your exam, you may request that scores be sent to as many as 4 designated recipients  Additional score reports cost $25.  Report your scores  Your unofficial V and Q scores will appear on screen. Official scores along with your writing scores can be viewed online in 2-3 weeks  The scores will become part of your reportable history and cannot be cancelled  Cancel your scores  You do not see your scores. No one sees your scores  Score Select  Option allows you to report only the scores you feel reflect your personal best

16 Scores  Please plan wisely to meet application deadlines  You will see official scores in 2-3 weeks online at the ETS website  Preliminary V and Q scores are seen online  Please allow 1 week for your schools to receive those scores – snail mail  Please allow an additional week before the scores are manually entered into the schools’ system Continued…
