15 Institute of Materials Engineering Częstochowa University of Technology Faculty of Production Engineering and Materials Technology In accordance with the principle “across all classes of materials" areas of interest of researchers of the Institute of Materials Engineering apply to all groups of engineering materials, ie. metallic, ceramic, polymer and composites. Scientific staff has always tried to explore and expand knowledge of engineering materials, to meet the growing demands of the industry. The main strands of research work are issues of surface engineering of metallic, ceramic and composite materials, and in particular issues of modifications of the structure and properties of the surface layer of these materials. The problem of the solidification structure and its influence on the properties of alloys is also an important topic of investigations. Developed since the 70s of the last century, the investigations of steel intended for the mining and shipbuilding industry, gave way to the modern materials for the medicine, the energy and automotive industries. Biomedical materials research conducted at the Institute of Materials Engineering are compiled in the field of materials science and advanced surface engineering and focus mainly on shaping the functional properties of metallic biomaterials and ceramics. The activities of the Institute of Materials Engineering apply to both cognitive and applied research which are inspired by the industry and end with implementation. Introduction

25 Short description of the Division including areas of research 1.Investigations of the effective utilization of raw and waste materials from iron/steelmaking metallurgy. 2.Thermodynamic calculations for the complex multiphase systems and for phase equilibrium states. 3.Numerical modeling of mass, momentum and energy exchange phenomena in the metallurgical reactor. 4.Physical modeling of the liquid steel hydrodynamic flow in tundish of continuous casters. 5.Laboratory investigation in the range of high pressure metallurgy: 1) for the “liquid metal – gas phase” system (up to 30 bar) with using of the levitation technique, 2) deep refining processes of liquid steels and alloys under elevated inert gas phase pressure (up to 10 bar) with using of the calcium halides – calcium solutions. 6.Application of the pyro- and hydrometallurgy recovery methods in recycling of metals from secondary materials.
