Unit 5b: How do Muslims express their beliefs? Unit 6a: Worship and Community
Many forms of worship involve the use of special items. Do you know which religions use these items in their worship? Do you know what they are used for? Puja tray Menorah Prayer mat Chalice Hinduism Judaism Islam Christianity
Unit 6a: Worship and Community Think about the features of worship in a particular religion. What sort of personal preparations are made before worship? What items are used during the act of worship? Are there any readings from sacred texts used during the worship? How are the features of the worship significant to believers? What do the different features symbolise/what meaning do they have? When you have thought about these things, produce a leaflet for your chosen religion explaining how a particular act of worship is carried out, what items are needed etc. Make sure you do not miss out any of the features and make sure you get the events in the correct order.
Unit 6a: Worship and Community Many religious believers use prayer or meditation as a way to communicate with God, for lots of different reasons. Give thanks Confess or express sorrow Praise God Ask for help Prayer is used to… Research how believers from different religions use prayer. Are there special times for prayer? Are there special places or buildings to pray in? What kind of preparations have to be made?
Unit 6a: Worship and Community Who would you tell and how would you express yourself if you… …wanted to admit you had done something wrong …were thankful for something …were feeling very happy about your life …needed some support or advice Look at some examples of prayers from different religions which have been written to express the feelings above. Think about the type of words which are used. Would you use words like this in your everyday life? Try writing your own prayer, meditation or poem to express one of the feelings above.

Here is an example: Amar is a member of three communities: his family, his school and the local mosque. family mosque school The area in the middle represents Amar, as he is part of all three communities

What are your responsibilities as a member of the community? Use a writing frame to list the ways in which you get benefits and support from your community, and the responsibilities which you have towards the community and the other people in it.
