Summary Setting: Ancient Greece ●Theseus ruled the city of Athens ●4 women from Thebes cried to him about their husbands who died ●Theseus conquered Thebes and brought back the dead bodies to the wives who then loved him ●When Theseus conquered Thebes, two men, Arcite and Palamon, survived and Theseus brought them back, healed them, then intended to lock them in a tower for life. ●One day Arcite and Palamon see outside a young woman, Emelye (Theseus’ sister-in-law), and they both fall in love with her. ●Theseus agrees to release Arcite, and orders him to never return to Athens and to return to Thebes. ●Both men become miserable and jealous of each other ○Palamon thinks Arcite will conquer Athens and force Emelye to be with him ○Arcite is jealous that Palamon gets to see Emelye everyday
Summary (continued) ●Mercury, messenger of the gods, appears in Arcite’s dream telling him to return to Athens; by this time Arcite has become frail from love sickness and think he will not be recognized if he wears a disguise. ●Arcite then takes a job as one of Emelye’s servants ●Coincidentally, Palamon escapes the tower, after seven years of imprisonment, during the time that Arcite returns to Athens. ●They confront each other about who will be with Emelye and Theseus finds them and tells them they both should die. ●Theseus’ wife and Emelye tell them that instead of being put to death they will fight in one year from now for Emelye with the 100 finest men they can find. ●Before the battle Palamon, Emelye, and Arcite each go to a Temple of a god and ask them something
Summary (continued) ○Palamon goes to the temple of Venus asking for victory in the name of love and there’s a sign he interprets as positive. ○Emelye goes to the Temple of Diana and asks that she not marry either of them but Diana tells her she must marry one, whom she cannot say. ○Arcite goes to the Temple of Mars asking for victory in the battle, he too receives a positive sign. ●The battle begins and Arcite brings a knife to Palamons throat, indicating that Arcite wins the battle. ●But Saturn, Venus’ father, does not want Arcite to have Emelye so he shakes the earth. This causes Arcite’s horse to throw him off and crush his chest. ●Arcite dies, but he tells Emelye that if he can’t have her then Palamon should. ●Emelye and Palamon mourn for a very long time until Theseus orders them to stop mourning, marry one another, and be happy from then on.
Relations to Modern Day: ●Professional athletes o Ben Roethlisberger, Ray Rice, and Michael Vick Some athletes have made poor decisions yet we still look up to some of them and hold them to high expectations. ●Politicians o We look up to them to help us, yet some are selfish and seek power.
