Canto XXVII By: Ian Vitalis & Anna Hoekstra

Literal Interpretation Still in circle VIII, Bowge viii Dante stopped by soul of Guido da Montefeltro who tells his story Member of Ghibellines Persuaded by Pope Boniface VIII to re-enter politics Gave incorrect advice to Boniface VIII The Situation Boney-Face

Allegorical Interpretation Sicilian bull - Instrument of torture; The victims were roasted alive in it, and their yells were supposed to sound like the bull bellowing. Guido comes to them in the image of a bull Rumbles when he talks – sounds like the bellowing bull

Moral interpretation “’But for the High Priest – may he rot in Hell! – Who thrust me back in the old evil mesh’” (70) Guido de Montefeltro Boniface VIII promoted Guido’s sin by forcing him back into politics “Fear nothing; here and now I absolve thee in advance” (101) Boniface VIII absolved Guido of sin before it was committed Need LOGIC over blind faith

Anagogical interpretation Guido believes that Dante is a spirit, therefore willing to tell his story (61-66) Shades in Circles of Fraud do not want their stories make known in the world – more shameful Dante does not undeceive him Guido stole the identity of others Flame steels Guido’s identity and ability to speak freely

Poetic interpretation “Its story told, the flame began to mourn Anew, and sorrowing passed away from us, twisting and tossing with its pointed horn ” (130) Harsh penalty placed on Guido for corruption Guido is twisting and tossing in the flame of hell
