Exodus 32 God Comes To Kill

“Aaron answered, ‘Don't be angry with me; you know how determined these people are to do evil. They said to me, 'We don't know what has happened to this man Moses, who brought us out of Egypt; so make us a god to lead us.' I asked them to bring me their gold ornaments, and those who had any took them off and gave them to me. I threw the ornaments into the fire and out came this bull-calf!’” (Exodus 32:22-24 GNB)

“The Lord said to Moses, ‘Hurry and go back down, because your people, whom you led out of Egypt, have sinned and rejected me. They have already left the way that I commanded them to follow; they have made a bull-calf out of melted gold and have worshiped it and offered sacrifices to it. They are saying that this is their god, who led them out of Egypt. I know how stubborn these people are. Now, don’t try to stop me. I am angry with them, and I am going to destroy them. Then I will make you and your descendants into a great nation’” (Exodus 32:7-10).

“The whole earth is mine, but you will be my chosen people, a people dedicated to me alone, and you will serve me as priests” (Exodus 19:5, 6).

Had Moses known…. “Moses had married a Cushite woman, and Miriam and Aaron criticized him for it. They said, ‘Has the LORD spoken only through Moses? Hasn't he also spoken through us?’” (Numbers 12:1-2 GNB)

“Korah son of Izhar, from the Levite clan of Kohath, rebelled against the leadership of Moses. He was joined by three members of the tribe of Reuben…and by 250 other Israelites, well-known leaders chosen by the community. They assembled before Moses and Aaron and said to them, ‘You have gone too far! All the members of the community belong to the LORD, and the LORD is with all of us. Why, then, Moses, do you set yourself above the LORD's community?’” (Numbers 16:1-3 GNB)

Now, don't try to stop me. I am angry with them, and I am going to destroy them. Then I will make you and your descendants into a great nation’” (Exodus 32:7-10 – GN).

“But Moses pleaded with the Lord his God and said, ‘Lord, why should you be so angry with your people, whom you rescued from Egypt with great might and power? Why should the Egyptians be able to say that you led your people out of Egypt, planning to kill them in the mountains and destroy them completely? Stop being angry; change your mind and do not bring this disaster on your people. Remember your servants Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. Remember the solemn promise you made to them to give them as many descendants as there are stars in the sky and to give their descendants all that land you promised would be their possession forever.’ So the Lord changed his mind and did not bring on his people the disaster he had threatened” (Exodus 32:11-14 – GN).

“He took the bull-calf which they had made, melted it, ground it into fine powder, and mixed it with water. Then he made the people of Israel drink it.” (Exodus 32:20 GNB)

“The next day Moses said to the people, ‘You have committed a terrible sin. But now I will again go up the mountain to the LORD; perhaps I can obtain forgiveness for your sin.’ Moses then returned to the LORD and said, ‘These people have committed a terrible sin. They have made a god out of gold and worshiped it.’ (Exodus 32:30-31 GNB)

 “Please forgive their sin; but if you won’t…  then remove my name from the book in which you have written the names of your people” (Exodus 32:32 – GN)

God the iconoclast – 1 : one who destroys religious images – 2 : one who attacks settled beliefs or institutions – “He (God) is the great iconoclast.” (C.S. Lewis)

Jesus “But Jesus did not say a word to her. His disciples came to him and begged him, ‘Send her away! She is following us and making all this noise!’ Then Jesus replied, ‘I have been sent only to the lost sheep of the people of Israel’” (Matthew 15:23, 24 – GN). “At this the woman came and fell at his feet. ‘Help me, sir!’ she said. Jesus answered, ‘It isn’t right to take the children’s food and throw it to the dogs’” (Matthew 15:25, 26 – GN). – ‘That’s true, sir,’ she answered, ‘but even the dogs eat the leftovers that fall from their masters' table.’ So Jesus answered her, ‘You are a woman of great faith! What you want will be done for you.’ And at that very moment her daughter was healed” (Matthew 15:27, 28 – GN).

2 Competing Kingdoms

“How you are fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! How you are cut down to the ground, You who weakened the nations! For you have said in your heart: ‘ I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God; I will also sit on the mount of the congregation On the farthest sides of the north; I will ascend above the heights of the clouds, I will be like the Most High.’” (Isaiah 14:12- 15 – NKJV)

“…the prince of this world…” (John 12:31) “I cannot talk with you much longer because the prince of this world is coming…” (John 14:30)

“Biblical Damage”

“The mother of James and John came to Jesus with her two sons. She knelt down and started begging him to do something for her. Jesus asked her what she wanted, and she said, ‘When you come into your kingdom, please let one of my sons sit at your right side and the other at your left.’ Jesus answered, ‘Not one of you knows what you are asking…. When the ten other disciples heard this, they were angry with the two brothers. But Jesus called the disciples together and said: “You know that foreign rulers like to order their people around. And their great leaders have full power over everyone they rule. But don’t act like them. If you want to be great, you must be the servant of all the others. And if you want to be first, you must be the slave of the rest. The Son of Man did not come to be a slave master, but a slave who will give his life to rescue many people. (Matthew 20:20-28 – CEV)

Stephen: – “He knelt down and cried out in a loud voice, ‘Lord! Do not remember this sin against them!’ He said this and died.” (Acts 7:60 GNB)

Paul: – “I am speaking the truth; I belong to Christ and I do not lie. My conscience, ruled by the Holy Spirit, also assures me that I am not lying when I say how great is my sorrow, how endless the pain in my heart for my people, my own flesh and blood! For their sake I could wish that I myself were under God's curse and separated from Christ.” (Romans 9:1-3 GNB)

Love Agapē Eros – Affection of a sexual nature, “being in love” Storge – Affection through familiarity Phileo – an affectionate, sentimental, passionate love - “brotherly love” – based largely on the emotions and feelings – since it is based on the feelings it is subject to change as the feelings change

Agape  Love in its highest and truest form – the love of which there is no greater  This is a love based in the mind – has more to do with how we treat others than on feelings › It adds principle to feeling in such a way that principle controls the feelings. It brings into play the higher powers of the mind and intelligence.  Selfless love that sacrifices for others › “There is no greater love (agape) than to lay down one's life for one’s friends.” (John 15:13 NLT)

“…it is a love which keeps loving when its object is unresponsive, unkind, unlovable, or completely unworthy... it gives one hundred percent and expects nothing in return!“ – Richard L. Strauss

“Ascribing worth to another at cost to yourself” – Greg Boyd

“For God loved (agape) the world so much that he gave…” (John 3:16 GNB) “Love is not self-seeking” (1 Corinthians 13:5)

“Unselfishness, the principle of God’s kingdom, is the principle that Satan hates; its very existence he denies. From the beginning of the great controversy he has endeavored to prove God’s principles of action to be selfish, and he deals in the same way with all who serve God. To disprove Satan’s claim is the work of Christ and of all who bear His name. It was to give in His own life an illustration of unselfishness that Jesus came in the form of humanity. And all who accept this principle are to be workers together with Him in demonstrating it in practical life.” (Education 154)

“Live in love, as Christ loved you and gave his life for you.” (Ephesians 5:1-2) “Do everything in love.” (I Corinthians 16:14) “The only thing that counts is faith energized by love.” (Galatians 5:6)

You have heard that it was said, 'Love (agape) your neighbor and hate your enemy.' But I tell you: Love (agape) your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, that you may be sons of your Father in heaven. He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous. If you love only those who love you, what reward will you get? (Matthew 5:42-44)

“Jerusalem, Jerusalem! You kill the prophets and stone the messengers God has sent you! How many times I wanted to put my arms around all your people, just as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, but you would not let me!” (Matthew 23:37 GNB)

“When the hour came, Jesus took his place at the table with the apostles. He said to them, ‘I have wanted so much to eat this Passover meal with you before I suffer!’” (Luke 22:14-15 GNB)

 “An argument broke out among the disciples as to which one of them should be thought of as the greatest. Jesus said to them, ‘The kings of the pagans have power over their people, and the rulers claim the title 'Friends of the People.' But this is not the way it is with you; rather, the greatest one among you must be like the youngest, and the leader must be like the servant. Who is greater, the one who sits down to eat or the one who serves? The one who sits down, of course. But I am among you as one who serves.’” (Luke 22:24-27 GNB)

“Jesus knew that the Father had given him complete power; he knew that he had come from God and was going to God. So he rose from the table, took off his outer garment, and tied a towel around his waist.” (John 13:3- 4 GNB) “A coward is incapable of exhibiting love; it is the prerogative of the brave.” - Gandhi

“Omnipotence is not to be understood as the power of unlimited coercion, but as the power of infinite persuasion, the invincible power of self-negating, self-sacrificial love.” - C.B. Caird

“As soon as Judas took the bread, Satan entered into him. Jesus said to him, ‘Hurry and do what you must!’ None of the others at the table understood why Jesus said this to him. Since Judas was in charge of the money bag, some of the disciples thought that Jesus had told him to go and buy what they needed for the festival, or to give something to the poor.” (John 13:27-29 GNB)
